    BACKLASH // Jacques Lu Cont
Thursday 4th November // Wax, South William Street, D2
Tickets 15eu from Carbon Records(in Urban Outfitters)

Since Its inception less than a year ago Backlash has always sought to promote
local talent but when we do venture abroad for our talent we like to bring you
something special, our free Chicken Lips set was one of our favourites.
And we think you'll agree this is very special too.

This is the first Irish DJing appearance in nearly two years of the man whose
dangerous amount of talent and go-your-own-way philosophy has
critically nudged UK dance music over the last near-decade. The man
who made the 80s OKto like again. It's Jacques Lu Cont!

As acid house was exploding all over the UK in the late eighties, a teenager
called Stuart Price, aka Jacques Lu Cont was - by his own admission - not
breaking into warehouses, necking pills or hanging out with Paul Oakenfold
at Spectrum. He was actually being treated for depression at a clinic in his
native Yorkshire. Previous to this, his parents - both classical musicians -
had strictly forbade any popular culture, including music, to enter their
house. 'When I came out of the clinic' says Jacques, 'my parents didn't want
me to be upset any more so they sort of relaxed all their rules around the
house. Since then, I've been sort of reclaiming my lost youth.'

His 1999 debut solo album Darkdancer (as LRD) was a landmark in post
acid-house theory. It merged bang up to date production and experience with
the style and sounds of the 80s in a way that was at once videogame-euphoric
and end of the century sussed. It's more than fair to say he was the first
to resurrect the 80s and slap an extra shimmering coat of chrome and granite
    paint on them.

Over the last few years, he's made a remarkable name for himself as a
remixer-non-pareil, effortlessly churning out classic re-rubs for Felix The
Housecat, Electric 6, Mirwais and tons of other underground names. His
contribution to the Fabric Mix CD series is generally regarded as one of its
highlights and this sign off quote reveals the talk behind the walk..

'I don't think DJing is that cool. I don't like the image of the silver
boxes and the hooded jacket and crappy sunglasses. To me, it's only worthy
doing if you are trying to do something different which is what I tried to
    achieve in my FABRICLIVE mix.'

See our man put his money where his mouth is on Thursday 04 November at Wax.

Disco to Disco - Six Of The Finest Jacuqes gems

Felix - Silver Screen Shower Scene (Jacques Lu Cont's TWD mix)
A heavyweight in nearly all of 2002's Best Of The Year lists, this classic
remix elevated the art high above your standard 'move bits around 4 cash' -*
transforming an angry, stompy Felix tune into pure Euro-elegance while
simultaneously managing to sound like the Theme from Ghostbusters! Who else could pull this off?

Whirlpool Productions - Disco 2 Disco (LRD Remix)
Boasting possibly the most annoying screechy noise in the history of
dance music, D2D is still irresistable and has been flung at you all year
in Backlash by Messrs Jon Averill, Philth and X*rox.

Les Rhythmes Digitales - Hey You What's That Sound?
A cheeky Skee Lo sample bounced up on top of three minutes of
squelchy juicy-fruit electrofunk. And what a video..JLC zapps the bad
guys with his trusty strap-on synth.

Zoot Woman - Gem (Paper Faces RMX)
All based on one focused-as-an-exocet bassline, Gem has been tunnelling
under the Backlash dancefloor all year. Damien Lazarus took the roof off
the Red Box with it back in May. You'll know it when you hear it.

Les Rhythmes Digitales - Jacques Your Body (Make Me Sweat)
The original rump shaker - this 1997 disco salvo of slap-bass loopz,
stutterfunk vocals and grinding body rhythms is about as ahead of it's
time as you can get. The 1999 re-release added extra melody and
    another top video.

The Dysfunktional Psychedelic Waltons - Payback Time (Jacques Lu Cont's TWD mix)
An early Backlash favourite proving that this lad does breakdowns
    better than Mariah Carey.
