    Hey all,

I want to remove the thermal pad on my intel stock cooler. I know that its recomended to use something with a high percentage alcohol for this.

So what exactly is good to use (I'm talking brand names) and where is best to get it?? Would there be anything in a chemists that might do the trick??

    Cheers,
    Gob.

There was a thread about this a while ago. You can get meths (methylated spirits) at the local chemist. It should do the trick just dandy.

The best thing to use is alcohol wipes i think you can get these in Cantec and other computer stores.. If you are going for the alcohol from the chemist make sure you use Lint Free cloth when removing the thermal compound, otherwise you will have bits of fabric stuck everywhere.

i just used a bit of wood to scrap off most of the gunge and then used the wifes nair varnish remover .... use wood so you wont scratch the heatsink and the wifes nair varnish remover has no perfume or other cack in it so it came up pretty clean .....its VERY hard to get it perfectly clean because the gunge stays in the tiny striations in the aluminium .... if you do manage to clean it then you'll just have to refill those striations with thermal compound....

Isopropyl Alcohol (from your chemist) and a lint free cloth is probably the best combination.

Thanks for the replys lads. I went into the chemist today asking for something with a high alcohol content. They told me to come back tomorrow cos the fella in the know was Spanish and wasnt really in the know. There will be someone else on tomorrow.

At least now I can tell them what I want. Would white spirts do the job? Have plenty of that...

Just a little update on this. Got a hold of some isopropanol. My brother is a printer and was able to get some for me. Worked very well. The stuff is feckin mad. Evaporates really fast!
