Well if you have a USB modem, it means that you will have to have the computer that the modem is connected to any time either of the computers want to access the net. Get a couple of wireless cards and a wireless Modem/Router.... easy to set up and the main PC doesnt need to be turned on to connect to the net... cost you about €160 at a guess.

the above pc has a wireless card not a wirelless acces point,

to set up a wireless network see below:

    1. what you need is a wireless access point (Sender), acces point connect to the pc that has adsl connnection

    2. ur girlfriends laptop connects thru a wireless card (Receiver) to the access point over radio

now once the laptop is connected to access point you can share files/ surf the net etc

so to answer your question no! you need to buy an acces point
    try ebay

I have a similar laptop, and had excellent results with this:
    http://www.netgear.co.uk/html/prod_routers_adsl.htm#dg834g

Has been excellent for running multiple PCs and laptops off. Don't try the Targa wi-fi card in another laptop, though. Must have shoddy drivers, cos it made my Vaio go
    do-lally.
