going to dark side at the end of the month and need to pick up some headphones for my pc to replace my surround. i'd also like them to replace the old sony earphones i use for my walkman so i won't be getting those fancy 5.1 headphones.

any recommendations on something of good quality say around the 40euro price bracket to put a limit on it?

    cheers

The best headphones i have ever come across with superb sound and portability are Koss PortaPro.
    http://www.koss.com/
Imported them from the good aul USA about a year and a half ago but cost me 60 euro because of about 20 euro shipping, but they may be available to buy in ireland/europe now. Def worth the search.

I got a pair of sennheiser px100s a few months ago for under €40 and they are really good, they're great for the pc and even better for listening to music on the go cos they come with a sturdy carrying case that they fold up into so they can take a lot of punishment when travelling

Where did you get PX100s for less than €40?
I agree they're great headphones. Very comfortable, decent sound and not too expensive. I use them with my mp3 player.

i got a pair of sennheiser HD 202. Great headphones.

I believe tower records just off grafton st have them for around €40...

good quality sound as well... good bass, keeps noise out and your noise in, so it doesn't annoy other people around you. Id definitely recommend them...

I picked up the headphones in a shop in Nenagh, Co Tipp called "Sounds of Music", unfortunately by less than 40 i mean €39.99 ;)

My recommendation is stay away from Philips.
I got a pair of Sennheiser's for about €100 and i gave them to my brother because my €32 pair of Sony headphones are more comfortable and have better sound. I know Sennheiser make some savage stuff but go to Argos and get (silver) sony headphones (with loads of holes on the outside of the earpiece...)

Honestly the best €30 i ever spent...

I've one pair of Sony MDR-V300, bought for €26 in Sony Centre... Not bad at all and the jack is gold plated... reasonably light and comfortable...

I went slightly upmarket and got a set of Senn' PX200. I tried the 100's in the shop, but decided the 200s were worth the extra cash.

Disclaimer : No clue what they cost in Ireland, but should be around €60. Yes, I know its over the stated budget, but I think they're worth an extra €20 over the 100s if you can get them for around that price.

will going for better phones necessairly give me a better sound experience on the ipod as it has a volume limit in the eu of 100 decibels iirc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

The 200s are closed and 100s are open, that's the only difference afaik.
There's about €10 difference in price.
Tower on Wicklow St have both. PX100s were €53 I think and the 200s were €60 or something like that, student discount will get you 10% off.

I got the PX100's in PEATS Parnell Street for €49.95. got them for the mp3 player (ipod), again, based on the online reviews, I went for the PX100's over the PX200's. Bring your player with you, PEATS let me try out the headphones before purchase.
In fairness, the PX100's look naff, I find I have to increase the player volume to get the same loudness as the ipod in-ears. The sound is 'warmer'. They are more comfortable that ipod in-ears. However, I could not find any appreciable improvement in sound quality. I was not blown away. MP3's were encoded @ 128 (I should point out I am not a bass junkie and I don't think the PX100's will give you that bass hit either should you be looking for that kind of thing). Hope this helps.

The Ipod earphones are shocking I think. Crap sound, only slightly better than the Creative earphones that came with my ZEN.
The PX100s were a massive improvement.
MP3s encoded at 128KB/s generally sound crap though no matter what the headphones are.

thanks for the replies again folks. i do like a bit of bass i have to say but i don't expect much from earphones.

with regards to the ipod earphones i had to get rid of them fairly swiftly as they started producing really bad sound after about a week. i moved onto some probably equally as bad sony buds i had lying around from an old discman but i've decided to move on.

peats have a nice selection on their website i think i shall check em out
