i'm a pretty big battlefield vietnam player and i was running it on my below rig at 1024*768 max details np on an old 17inch dell jobbie with good picture quality

however i've just picked up a refurbished 21inch monitor which is nice. now ideally i'd run it at 1600*1200 with max details but the machine can't handle it.

so i was wondering do people usually go for the higher resolution with low detail or low resolution with high detail or a compromise somewhere in between

i can see the effect on fps by changing quality or resolution immediately using fraps and atm i'm undecided on what to use.

does it jus come down to personal perference?

errr.. some where in between would be best... like you dont want to be sacrificing all the extra effects and details just to accommodate a larger res.

Usually I'd prefer to play at 800*600 with high detail (such as it is at that resolution :D) than my desktop 1280*1024 and have it play like a dog... Thankfully, I'm in a position where not many games force me to choose anymore... AT least not the ones I'd be playing. UT2004 has no qualms about running highest detail settings, but somehow I think Doom3 or Half Life 2 might require me to step down a bit alright.

Depends on the game, but I like to have high refresh rates.

On a 21 inch monitor I would play some games at 800x600 (QuakeWorld) to get 154hz.

    Depends on the game tbh.
If it's an online competitive multiplayer first-person-shooter, then I keep dropping the detail until my fps is smooth and solid.
If I can get nice fps at a higher resolution, but with less detail then I'll go with that, but only if there's some super-long-range-unzoomed sniping going on... otherwise it's fps all the way to max, then increase detail until fps starts to drop from max... back off a bit and keep max fps.
A normal single player game is a whole other story though... I like the fancy graphics at the cost of a few fps, but only if snap-reactions with high accuracy isn't an issue.
Sometimes I find a game with smooth fps more visually impressive looking than with fancy bells and whistles... again, it depends on the game.

Because you can really notice the difference between 100hz and 154hz

Yeah it depends on the game and how important fps is. For muti player I would want at least 60fps but for single 30fps is fine. I usually notice a big difference in quality between 800x600 and 1280x1024 but little between 1280x1024 and 1600x1200. Jaggies in 800x600 look terrible but for some multi player games like cs, 800x600 is perfect..

    Oh don't go there
Suffice it to say that if you know the game well enough, you can feel the difference.

i'm was waiting 21 inch to be collected today as its not only a couple of the buttons work on it and the guy is gonna drop off another one. the courier never came though so instead of taking it out of the box i put my old 17inch back up. picture and text looks great on it so i looked into it and dispite it being on and being a dell its a trinitron screen which would explain why stuff looks great on it

now baring in mind i didn't have a chance to adjust the 21 inch as nothing was working and as a result i could never get black to look black on it but i'm pretty sure the text never looked as good on it.

ideally i'd like the best of both worlds it seems a 21inch trinitron would be nice :) but then again i'd like a 6800GT so i could run games at 1600*1200 and a 90nm amd64 and socket 939 system to go hand in hand with it.

    i'm never happy :(

Don't worry - when you get a faster PC/Upgrade you can increase the resolution then. Lets face it you might as well drop the resolution when you're watching DVD's
