I was told I might be able to get help in this section of boards.I was wondering could somebody advise me please. I had an expensive old Onkyo multi region which plays nearly everything apart from certain dvds from Asia.
So I bought a new multi region Mitsubishi Black Diamond player which plays absolutely everything. But when I played any widescreen dvds the black lines on either end of the TV were a lot bigger,in other words the picture was way more narrow.Even when I changed the TV to 16x9 there still big black lines on either end.I thought at the time it was just the 32 inch TV.But recently borrowed my sisters dvd machine and it had the excact same problem.I connected it to the TV at the same time as the old Onkyo player and the picture was much bigger than on the Onkyo machine. You can change the zoom on the dvd player but you lose to much on all sides.I know it can also depends on the dvd film itself. But I tested the same film on both machines and there was still a huge difference. Can anybody tell me please if there is some sort of specification that you new on a dvd player to get the full picture as want to buy a new one or can anybody recommend a good multi region dvd player that I wouldn't have this problem with. Thanks in advance.

Try going into the setup menu of the dvd player. Then go into Picture Setup and select 16:9 picture. It sounds like it is on 4:3.

More than one widescreen format exists this is the issue, there is no standard, you will find that you cant change the issue unless you stretch or distort the image.

Most modern theatrical films are created in a shape that is different from the shape of a standard television set. A standard TV is 1.33 times as wide as it is tall; in other words, it has an aspect ratio of 1.33:1. Movies are much wider, with an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 or 2.35:1; hence the word widescreen. This leads to problems when attempting to watch a movie on TV. One solution is to use a modified aspect ratio (MAR), changing the shape of the film image to fit the TV screen. Common methods for presenting MAR are pan-and-scan and open-matte. The other solution is sometimes called letterboxing, in which the film is presented in its original aspect ratio (OAR) by shrinking the image so that its width matches the width of the TV screen, leaving extra space above and below.

The other format that is common is 1.78:1

If they decided on a standard formay you would not have the issue.

Settings wont help at the same time as maintaining image integrity.

If you have black bars on the side of a picture on a widescreen set it usually means the DVD player is outputting a 4:3 picture.

Changing the setting to 16:9 and having the TV on 16:9 mode should sort it out.

I dont have any problems with my setup no matter what I am watching.

is the format of the film NTSC or PAL?
ditto for the respective settings on the TV and DVD player

Thanks a millon guys, that was it.I changed it from 4:3 to 16:9 in the setup menu and it was fine after that.I was playing around with my mothers dvd
player at the weekend. Now she has a normal TV and not a widescreen one but when I put on a widescreen dvd the picture was still bigger and better when I changed the dvd setup to 16:9.I thought when you have a normal TV you get the bigger picture on the 4:3 setup??
