DVD Player Technical Question?

    I don't know if I'm in right area of boards for this but I couldn't find a technical area for dvd players.I was wondering could somebody advise please.I have a old Onkyo multi region which played nearly everything apart from certain dvds from Asia (copies i think).So I bought a new multi region Mitsubishi Black Diamond dvd player which plays absolutely everything;
    dvd,vcd,dvd-r,mp3's.But when I played any widecreen dvds the black lines on either end of the tv were a lot bigger,in other words the picture was more narrow.Even when I changed it to 16:9 there were still black lines on either end.I thought at the time it was just cause the TV was a 32inch but recently the Mitsubishi Black Diamond machine accidentally broke.So I brought the old Onkyo player down and noticed the bigger picture straight away.I borrowed a cheap multi region from my sister that she picked up in Dunnes to test and again the picture was very narrow.You can change the zoom on the dvd player to inlarge the picture but you lose too much on all sides.Can anybody tell me please if there is some sort of specification that you need on a dvd player to get the bigger picture that my old Onkyo has as a want to buy a new one.Thanks in advance.

    I would recommend you print the following article out, have a read through it and come back with any queries. The whole subject is confusing as many people have their equipment set up incorrectly

    Anamorphic Widescreen DVD

    This would be more suited to the Home Entertainment forum
