Really slow dial-up!

I was called out by the family to fix the home computer. Their internet connection (eircom.net) is crawling along: 1-2 kb/s download speeds, 1-2 minutes for the BBC or CNN home page to come up.

I tried a few things to fix it:
1)Ran Lavasoft Ad-Aware
2)Turned off Windows auto update, to make sure it wasn’t taking up bandwidth

None of these worked, so I then dialled into my IOL account to see if that would improve anything. No joy. No improvements at all!!

Has anyone got any suggestions?? It is incredibly painful to use.

Specs:
Windows XP (SP2 installed)
Dell computer (not too sure what model and specs but its only a year old and think decent specs)
56K modem

**** phone line maybe. try change the phone cable or change the splitter if one used

Phone socket is directly beside the computer, so cable is not very long.

Thought it might be the cable, but the speeds used to be okay and its just recently they've been getting bad. Don't think anything happened to the cable, so I sorta ruled that out.

Any other suggestions, or could it still be the cable??

Whats it like to other sites? It may be just them... :rolleyes:

All sites chronically slow!!

Any other suggestions??

I know that if your speeds are below 12kbps, that it is legally unacceptable, and eircom MUST repair your line for you.
