I'm off to Holland from Nov 5th to 8th for the EU Championship and was considering getting my tongue done to mark the occassion.

I know its been asked before, but can someone tell me again, how long roughly does it take to heal, and how long will I have to go witout food while it heals?

Secondly, is it wish to have a peircing when doing a self defence? I know its in my mouth it'd bem but is it still unsafe?

It takes about 2 weeks to heal but a few months to fully heal,
i was on a diet of popcorn and soup for 2 days straight but by the third day i was managing solid foods,it hurt but i was managing them.
It shouldnt be much of a problem with any martial arts, not that i know of anyway

Thanks for reply, I can't see myself living on popcorn and soup for more than 3 days. I'd starve.

Though, I would love to get it done! Guess I just lack the guts to go for it.

When I got mine done i was grand, could do everything. eat the next morning was a bit of a struggle but day after that was ok
eating/smoking/drinking, these all slow the healing process down, but I've known a lot of people who have done these and their tounges healed grand, smoking and drinking just igher the risk of infection..

the first week wasn't very nice, warm soup and stuff, but i thinkyou're better off doing it when you're in a routine because being in a strange country and having to look for specialist foods and stuff could make it very uncomfortable.
its not fun and sucks your attention for 2 or 3 days, but its starts getting better then.
one thing - don't drink for two weeks. mine took 2 months to stop swelling as a result of going back to normal to early. after the first week it felt fine but it took longer to heal as a result of my drinkin an smokin and all that.

i play football with it in, it doesn't affect me, but if i were to play at a higher level i'd have to take it out. i'd say its the same for you, the higher the level the stricter the rules.

    I think I'll pass on this. I'm a chicken really aren't I?

nah, seriously. I'm just worried about fighting with it in, besides I'll only be in Holland for a long weekend, and will spend much of my time there training, so I don't think I'll have time to nurse a new peircing.

I was however considering marking the ocassion with a personalised tattoo. maybe something related to TKD, I haven't really thought about it indepth yet. but maybe korean script writing, or a silhuoette (sp?) of a martial artist doing a high kick or something.

And suggestions, pm me or post up pic.

    Thanks,
    Memphis

It's because veins in your tongue might get in the way of the needle/bar.

A quick search on Bme would of told you....

"There are two common reasons that might stop you from getting your tongue pierced. First, are overly prominent veins on the bottom of the tongue. Sometimes they can be avoided (so you may want to get a second opinion from an experienced piercer if you are told no), but there are rare cases where it would not be safe. The second thing that can make a tongue piercing difficult (or impossible) is an overly prominent tongue web. If it is too long and tight, you won't be able to stick out your tongue, making it difficult to pierce. In addition, a piercing might painfully rub on the webbing. "

Yeah my aunt is a dentist and shes very apprehensive and always warns me of the dangers of tongue piercings...i dont listen though :D

as long as you dont hold your tongue out while you are fighting im sure you will be grand, why not just wait until you get back

Oh.. do i have a story to tell you ... i got my tongue pierced.. and i went to go apply for a job.. well it was like.. 3 weeks i had the tongue ring.... and i went to the job.. took out the ring.. thinking it was only going to be an hour... it turns out that it was a 6 hour program... after i rushed to the bathroom shoved the bar in my tongue.. and jumped on the train home.. on the train.. my whole left side went numb... i jumped on the bus from down town and went home.. i ran to the mirror..and looked to see what happened... well i didn't know one side of the bar is dull and the other is sharp.. and i had pierced another hole in my tongue... ouch..... and i was determinded to have it.. so i pulled it out.. and pinched my touch... again. i tried to slip it in my tongue and.. piecred another hole in my tongue... so i had 3 holes... in my tongue... i left it in for a week.. couldn't handle it.. on top of my tongue it started to tear... and i was feaking out. .so i pulled it out.. and havent had it in... in 5 years.. still have the scares though,.....i have other piecings.. but no more tongue...
