I'm off to Eindhoven in Holland for the EU Tae kwon do championship from Nov 5th to 8th.

Its just a long weekend really, we will have a day or so to oursleves and I wondered if someone here could tell me what to see, what the people are like, where to go shopping etc. I don't wanna be coming home saying I saw nothing, or did nothing.

    Any info appreciated!

Memphis: nice to read you're planning a visit to Eindhoven!

I was born in the city of Eindhoven and life in a small village (Oirschot) just 12 km from Eindhoven. I really like to tell you something more about the city and the region of Eindhoven.

    Some information:

Eindhoven is the fifth largest city of the Netherlands (so not Holland) and the largest city in the South of the country with something more than 200,000 inhabitans. Eindhoven is situated in the province of Noord-Brabant (North-Brabant) just 30 km from the border with Belgium (more information about North-Brabant and its villages and cities in English: http://noordbrabantchurches.tripod.com/noordbrabant.html ) .

Eindhoven is an industrial city with the multinational Philips as the most important company in the city and region of the city. Eindhoven is a nice city and I'll think you can have a good time there but it's not a city with very much things to see.

It's a modern city and there are not very much old buildings to see because the city was damaged very badly during WW2. When you like shopping, Eindhoven is a nice place to be. Also a street named "Stratumseind" is worth visiting when you like pubs and clubs. Stratumseind is a street with more than 50 pubs, clubs and eating-places. In the weekends this is the place to be for most young people from Eindhoven and the region, thousands of them go there (sometimes I’ll be there to). When you like soccer than a stadium tour through the stadium of PSV (capacity 36,500) is a nice option (7 euro). The guides speak Dutch, English, German and French. More information: www.psv.nl (in Dutch and Englih). There are more things to see and do in Eindhoven but of course this depends of your interests. The website of the Tourist Information Office; http://www.vvveindhoven.nl/int/ can give you some more information about the city of Eindhoven and the region. Of course you also can ask me when you would like to know something more about the city etc.

Within 30 km from Eindhoven you can find some villages which are worth visiting. Oirschot (the place where I life) is a nice village with old buildings and some nice things to see. It's a small village with 11,000 inhabitans. It's 12 km from Eindhoven and you will be there by car within 20 minutes. More information about Oirschot you can find at:
www.oirschot.nl (only in Dutch), http://noordbrabantchurches.tripod.com/oirschot.html (in English), http://www.oirschotdigitaal.nl (only in Dutch)
http://www.vvvoirschot.nl (site of the Tourist Information Office, in Dutch only)

Other nice places to visit near Eindhoven are: Oisterwijk (+/- 25 km from Eindhoven) and Liempde (+/- 25 km from Eindhoven). Also the city of Den Bosch (‘s-Hertogenbosch) is worth visiting, this is +/- 45 minutes from Eindhoven, Den Bosch is the capital of the province of North-Brabant with 125,000 inhabitans and an old innertown.

I you would like to have some more information about the city of Eindhoven and the region of the city than just ask me or send me an e-mail; sander_putmans@hotmail.com . You also can add me to your msn list.

I love to tell you more about my region!

    Good luck!

    Kind regards,

    Sander

p.s. my apologies for my English
