New power connecters!?

    Hey all,

    I just recently got a new chip and mobo. I havent had time to put them into my box yet. Thing is, I noticed that my new mobo has one of those 4 pin connecters that supplies the chip with 12V. Now my pus being rather old and generic (300W btw), doesnt have this connecter.

    But, is there not a 12V line on the other classic connecter. The new mobo has that connecter too. So my question is this, do I need a new psu or will the one I have now do the job?? (I guess I would be reluctant to set everything up only to damage something by not having the extra molex connected)

    Mobo -> Abit IC7 - G
    Chip -> p4 3.0Ghz Northwood, 800fsb

    Only "ATX12V" power supplies have the extra ATX power connector. Ordinary "ATX" PSU's don't.

    The extra 4 pin power connector on modern boards and ATX12V PSU's are present due to extra current requirements of new systems.

    I've seen systems run fine (for a limited test time) without the second connector plugged in but you may experience instability if one 12V connection is insufficient for your current requirements.

    So, it looks like I'll be needing a new PSU??

    Anyone tried running a rig without the extra connecter? If so, how long did you run it for?

    No you don't

    You need a Non-P4 ATX Power Supply 4 Pin Molex Connector to +12V Pentium 4 4 Pin Connector CPU Power Adapter

    Here's a link to answer your question.

    The results are that it works! Just like the christmass tree lights that come with a 2 pin plug you buy a 3 pin plug adaptor. :D

    Yes me for about 6months. I did not put in the 4pin from the start i forgot. And then down the line when i opend my machine i noticed it was not pluged into the mb. As i did not know what it did and my machine was running fine i left it out for a few more months. I also had a 300watt crap PSU, it blew in the end due to heavy overclocking.
