Annoying NY gangster accents in ads...

... why is this fake NY gangster accent used do much in ads on both radio & TV in Ireland. That hasn't been cool in decades if ever (and it's got nothing to do with the Sopranos, there isn't the remotest Soprano-type vibe to these ads). I know Irish ad creators are notoriously uncreative but who falls for this stuff? Has anyone here been compelled to buy some random merchandise thinking a phoney NY gangster would approve?

Theres an ad on radio which really annoys me, this new york cabbie complaining because the irish are not shopping in the "bling bling" stores of new york because there is a department store in ireland. you go into the store and everything costs an arm and a leg.

Why do people on the radio always seem to put on American accents? They often don't even seem to do it deliberately.

Usually, I block the products out - there was one for the lottery that I remember, with Marty Whelan in a limo.

The ads on tv for Permanent TSB(i think?) with wassisname are good. One with a bloke in the shower, another with a couple in bed. They're funny because it works well.

I don't know... How on Earth to they think that having their bank represented by a guy who looks like a mafia loan shark is good idea?

I'd much rather advertising agencies used sex to sell to me, rather than mafia hoods!

I agree completely. Imagine if they used the Dublin equivalent of a NY gangster to sell mortgages!

Its been like this to some degree since the modern advertising era began sometimes in the late 70s. I think its a subconsious "cultural cringe" which belives that anything will sell better if associated with the United States in
    some way.

    Mike.

At least the Statoil ads were sort of tongue in cheek about the whole thing...

    "Hi! I'm Ed Winchester!"

Those jamster ringtone adds on mtv and others are sooo annoying because the voice of the woman speaking is horrbile its like a peice of chalk being squeak'd on a blackboard.Arrghh how annoying i'd wish they would just change the voice on the jamster adds!

Radio ads are the worst. Ad execs seem to think that having extreme mad characters (who clearly drink too much coffee in the morning) shouting at you through the radio or involved in some nonsensical plot, is a good thing. I mean yes, it was funny to listen to the first time, not funny the 20th time I've heard the ad in an hour.

Q: Is 'wassisname' the guy who played 'Billy Batts' in Goodfellas? Ya know, the guy who tells Joe Pesci to 'go home and get your fcukin shinebox?' and as a result gets a shallow grave? They talk/look similar anyway.

yes they are quite annoying but the ones which annoy me the most are the ads with men dressed as old women and such.Like them bounty ads. They really get on my nerves, so does that eircom ad with the ugly old guy from kilinascully.Dont they realise these ads are going to be hated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭DapperGent

    Yeah it's Billy Batts.

If someone whacks him they'd be on really shaky ground because he's a made guy. They'd need to have sit down and get an okay or they'd be the ones to get whacked.

All ads, especially radio ads are annoying. I generally turn off the radio, until they are over buy this isnt always possible.

That hole NY thing pisses me off too. There's one for soap or something and you have the "gangster" saying "all I wanna do is stop the 'hoyt'".

All I wanna do is start the hurt on his head. Grrrr.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,286 ✭✭✭SprostonGreen

As for the TSB ad with Phil Leotardo from the Sopranos. Banks and building societies aligning themselves with fictional crooks, how come they never spotted the irony.

The worst offenders are the ones where the creators make an attempt at conversation. You know the type-
"Howaya Mary, did you hear the news? Xxxxxx is having a sale! Now all their egg whisks are going for half the usual low low prices!"

"Wow, Maura, that sounds great. I'm off to Xxxxxx right now to take advantage of the madness."

The addition of children to such travesties makes me want to stab radio in the eyeballs.

Remember there was some radio station that had an ad on the side of the busses and it said "<insert radio 'personality's name here>, yes he is American!".

    That was amusing

anyone remember the station or the radio person

One of the most annoying ads I ever heard was one that tried claiming that Nietzsches' Eternal Recurrence was about something being repeated until it evolved into something better. It isn't - it's called the eternal recurrence of the same and means exactly what it says on the tin. (It's in chapter 57 of Zarathustra.) It's the eternal recurrence of the same events in an infinite number of repetitions.

Why is it that when advertisers try to sound smart they end up sounding so dumb?

    Probably Jack on Spin 103.8

I think it was someone on 2fm... but I suppose it's not that important  :o

Seeing as were on topic of stupid ad's i defiitely think the ringtone one's are the worst! There is about 4 or 5 on every time theres a break on itv/mtv/tmf or whatever, I can here them in my head:
"for just 6 yoyo's you and get the latest top 10 ringhtones to your phone, This weeks top 3,text 57777 now, text top3 for Jamster - smash hit, text top2 for jamelia, text top1 to get twista-sunshine direct to your phone, remember text 57777 now"

    God! there awfu ad's !

another appauling ad is the guy in the office who needs to buy a car, you know the one , It's raining outside in the ad - Now my biggest problem is the fact that the ad tells you that if you get a BoI credit card youy can get a car, WRONG!!!! you don't buy a car on your credit card, thats justy asking for trouble.

The worst for american sounding ad's and general programming is spin 103.8 it seem everyone in the station is some kind of just "graduated" commerce student that wants to be some sort of american jock bastard.

it's the Goodfella's pizza ads that really annoy me. It's all NY accents and "pizza-pies"
    and then at the bottom is the text;

    Made In Ireland

the ads are supposed to be annoying because it has a stronger impact on the audience...the proof being you posting about a gripe you have with a certain type of ads and in doing so has lead to the ppl reference products and services hence its a positive result for the marketers...(free advertising)

bland ads have more a subliminal effect om ppl like washing powder, generic products we dont tend to think of from day to day but are in our minds without us even knowing until say; we are in the supermarket walking down the washing powder isle and you see a colour that sparks a memory and bingo you remember that certain product above all othersfor know other reason then it had the most influential ad.

the ringtone ads are very good from a marketers point of view, i mean who does'nt know what 5 77 77 will get you?????

By the way do we Irish approve when 99.9% (brad pitt in "snatch" being the .1%) of american actors absolutely slaughter the irish accent?????

I know I'm nitpicking, but Brad Pitt didn't play an Irish character in Snatch. He was a pikey. There's a difference. If you think regular Irish people and pikeys sound the same then ...God love ya...

One of the worst ads imho is the biddies talking about the kitchen towel. WOW LET'S COMPARE RECEIPTS. OMG LOOK AT THAT, THE BETTER KITCHEN TOWEL IS CHEAP TOO, I'M SOLD.

Why do they call them yoyos? Is it a really lame attempt to be cool or an expression of their disdain for the European Central Bank or what?

not for a second...but where do pikeys originate from?????hence it is one of the '000s of accents on this island (unfortunatly)

I completely agree. I just end up going 'Shut up , just shut up, I know you think you're smart but just SHUT UP!' Ads just sound so pretentious when they do stuff like that. What ad was it btw?

definitely disdain for the European Central Bank :D It also dawned on me that maybe they play the same ad in the UK and call it yoyo's so they wont have to change to euro's. Would kinda link in with the english voice in the Ad's

but most importantly dont forget to "text top1 to 5 77 77 now, and get twista-sunshine direct to your phone"

The most annoying ad i seen recently is the recycling ads with this guy and some old one coming on to him. I hate those ads with a passion.
