I've read the where to buy thread but none of the links are much good for digital cameras.

I need to spec & cost a digital camera fro my father in law. Looking for something compact and not too dear with 3-4MP & 3x optical zoom.

Where do you buy online (non-US)?

    What would you recommend?

    Why non US?
This is a 5 mb fugi which is cheap at 244.46 - I've purchased from them with no problems.

www.7dayshop.com do cameras as well as the little things like ink & paper. Selection isn't huge but the prices are better than ny-camera and delivery is ... edit ... not free, but cheap at £2.95.

Difficult to recommend a camera without some more information. What do you mean by "not too dear"? What kind of features are important to you (good movie mode, ultra compact size, manual controls, water resistance etc.)

As for online retailers, try www.amazon.co.uk They have a good selection of cameras. Prices and customer service are pretty good too.

Amazon's digi camera selection is here. At "not too dear", I'd recommend their current top seller (the Pentax). Comes in under 150 euros so not too dear, not too big and has 3.2MP and a 3x optical zoom. GF has one.

If you're looking for something truly compact, the Canon Ixus range is nice and the Pentax Optio S4i is nicer (and smaller) but any of these will cost you rather more.

it cost me approx €110 and is 6.6mp with a 128 sd card!!

How about a Canon A85. I've read a few reviews of this and it seems to be a nice little camera. 4mp, 3x optical, some manual controls, excellent picture quality. Uses normal AA batteries which is a big advantage compared to expensive proprietary batteries. It has a fairly poor movie mode though - if movies are very important to you then stay away but if not then it could be a good bet. Price is 171 pounds sterling from amazon.co.uk.

PS that ebay camera mentioned looks to be a 3.2mp sensor with interpolation to 6.6mp which is NOT the same thing as a true 6.6mp sensor. It may still be good value as a 3.2mp (haven't checked out the specs.) but it's not a 6.6mp camera by any stretch.

Also, I'm always suspicious of these no-brand type cameras such as the ones sold by LIDL or that one on ebay. They may be cheap but the picture quality from many of them is really poor due to poor quality optics. You're better off paying extra and getting a branded (canon, nikon, pentax, minolta, olympus, fuji, panasonic, sony etc.) camera IMO.

I'm interested in a digital camera that will work well with my Mac running OS X. I am not sure about how to judge specs but I need a real (nondigital) zoom, and often the kinds of pictures I need to take are good clean closeups of text, signage, and things of that sort. I figured I would stick to one of the cameras Apple lists in the Apple Store. Any recommendations?
