Yeah, I’ve been using it a bit. So far it seems really good. The most impressive thing is that it’s lightening fast, the only downside I’ve noticed is that if you have a few results, its not as good a Google-web is at ranking the results.

i use the google toolbar for most searches, but if it doesn't come up with anything i use the copernic agent. gives better results than anything else, but not free unfortunately.

I've just installed that Google Desktop search. It's indexing my HD now, might take a few hours it said.

All Google need now is an IM app. There's rumours that they're working on a browser too (they registered gbrowser.com)

Be aware that google desktop indexes all files regardless of user.
So a limited user on your computer can search files of the admin or any other user.
    Hardly a great idea really.

Using the web drive for about a week now, very handy :)

Only snag I have is that all files have to sit in your inbox, or is there another way?

Actually that is total BS. You can only index what you could normally see on the machine under your account. If another user logs in and uses google their search cache is stored in their own area.

Some muppet of a reporter claimed this is what happened, but they were basically using a public machine where everyone had admin account (debunked on /. ).

That would make sense. I doubt google would be able to come up with a programme that could break any and all security systems in PCs.

D'oh! Note to self: Read whole post before replying.

What are the advatages of the Google Desktop Search that a normal find or grep or locate can't do?

    Ah right, fair enough.
I didn't follow the slashdot article to it's conclusion.
It seemed to make sense that if an admin installed the google desktop that it would be able to access all files.
And the possibility of there being a bug that would allow a limited user access the files indexed during an admin install, didn't seem too unrealistic.

Well the admin or root is quite able of accessing all files on a system as it is. And I can't really see why it would be a security hole if root ran it. So long as the permissions were set to something like rwx
(ie 700), then there would be no way for normal users to access that file, unless of course google had created a super cracking tool. :)
