Serial ATA - Power up problem

    Hi,

bought myself a serial ATA drive from Komplett. It arrived today. So I opened up the PC and intalled it, closed the case and flicked the switch to turn the PC back on.
    However, nothing happened.

I opened up the case again, checked all the cables, made sure everything was securely in it's place and tried again. Still nothing!
The L.E.D. on the motherboard was on so I knew the power was getting to the board.
It fiddled around for a little while longer without any luck.

Eventaully I got bored and unplugged everything from the PC and refitted everything back in. Still nothing.
I did this again, but this time without the ATA drive....and it worked!

So then I plugged the ATA drive in again, and it wouldn't power up again.
    Unplugged...nothing!
Unplugged everything, plugged back in again (except S-ATA drive) and it worked.

As far as I can tell, it seems to be shorting or something like that.

Has anybody come across this before? Or more importantly, does anybody know a solution to this?

    Thanks for your help!
    Niall

    Details :

    Motherboard : Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe
    S-ATA drive : Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 80Gb

When you say nothing happens, does the PC POST?

If so then it is most likely a simply connecter. With the ASUS board make sure you have the jumper set to read from SATA.

    Thanks, joePC

When I say nothing happens, I mean, the fans don't even start to move! The existing IDE drives don't make a sound....nothing! It was scary for a few minutes!
Now this jumper you talk about, where might one find that!
I'll have to dig out the manual there!

Found the jumper! It's jumpered! :(

it wouldnt have anything to do with the jumper setting, without having it set to read from sata wouldnt stop it from powering it up, it just doesnt read from it, but it still gets power!

check the sata power connector and the cable, its not so easy to short the ata power as they are very big and you cannot plug them in and have them shorted, unless if you made your own wiring and didnt wrap them up properly.

it could be possible that the sata power is shorted, since you never have that problem before untill you got the sata drive, or maybe its the cable thats causing the problem!

The cable looks OK. There is no dirt or anything in S-ATA side of the connector that might be shorting anything. I can only assume that the power adaptor has been made correctly....it came with my moitherboard.

    Any other ideas?

Actually I've the same motherboard and a Seagate Barracude drive as well and I also have a problem. Now mine boots up fine but if I do a soft reset/restart it comes up with the S-ATA report screen and hangs when it comes to list the Primary Channel device (which is the Seagate). No problems ever when booting up cold.

Have you got the latest Drivers for the silicon image controller?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 566 ✭✭✭byrnenj

I'm pretty sure I have the latest drivers. There was a windows update with the latest drivers, but I'll have to go to their site and check that when I get home.

Hopefully it's not a problem with the controller since it's intgrated on my Motherboard, but it's still in Warranty anyway.

Well I can't think of anything else to do, so I guess it's take out my motherboard and send it back to Komplett.
