This may be better off in a different forum but...

I'm trying to configure my website for all users - slow, fast connection speeds, IE, NN, Omni etc. However, due to the technological advancements in this day and age blah blah, I don't have a good grasp of what people are using and how fast or slow they are accessing the internet.

What speed are you all connecting at and what browser are you using pray tell?
(to get the ball rolling I'm using Internet Explorer 5 and Netscape 4.73 on a 56k modem) smile.gif

Thanks for the feedback guys. It seems that there must be a larger percentage of net users on 56k than I thought, need to reduce my image sizes and work on on load stuff then I guess.

Just out of curio, those that didn't say, what version of browsers are you using? Some Javascript stuff cannot be handled by older models.

    Tanks again

I use a couple of browsers for testing websites so here goes....

Opera 5.12 (prefered choice for general browsing)
    IE 6 (beta)
    Netscape Navigator 4.78
    Netscape 6.01 (boo!)
    Mozilla 0.9.2

I use ISDN at home and some really super fast lan thingy at college.

Well for site development i would not aim any higher than a general user level of 56k... it is just too difficult to get someone to download a huge site on a 56k
BUt someone on ADSL can download a big or small site so stick to the 56k as standard(for the next 3 years anyway)...

    As for me....
    I am on a 56k... ADSL in a week
I use IE 5.5 but will probably be using a Linux based browser soon....
My conn on a 56k is average of 45.667 kb/s

If it hasn't loaded in 20/30 seconds you have work to do. Get rid of javascript unless it *really* adds something to the page, otherwise it just pis$es people off. If you can use text somewhere instead of an image, d o it.

The best thing to do when making sites, is to do the coding in Notepad. The reason for this is because most conventional WYSIWYG editors will insert a lot of rubbish code that won't help interpreting speeds on the other end. But then again this is probably the last thing you should consider, but nice to remember nevertheless.

Also if you want to make your site very presentable (ie graphics), make sure you still to a few rules of thumb. If it is a graphic logo or something that usually doesn't comprise too many colours (<= 256), you should save it as a GIF. If it's an image or photo with lotsa colours you shoulds save it as a JPEG. If you are going to create animations, keep them minimal and try to keep away from animated GIFs because they are a very bad idea on low bandwidth connections. But if you require animations I recommend you take time to learn flash. This uses vector graphics instead of bitmapped ones, which loads much faster. But try not to go overboard on graphics.

What I find myself doing lately is designing my site with frames. It is uncommon for a ppl to be using a browser that doesn't support frames in this day and age. Even though, you can use the <noframes> tag, to display content in browsers that don't support them. Anyway what I do is create frames that will have static content (ie images) and they usually act as a nav pannel or something and then have a dynamic frame(s) that will change. Keep graphics in this frame low, and you will have a speed site. Once the initial loading is over, the browsing experience will be pleasurable. You could even preload (cache) images for future downloads. But only do this if your interface doesn't change too often.

    Anyway I'll go now

Adding additonal code is true, but not enough to make a significant difference.
Doing sites in notepad is fine its a few simple frames and tables, but how many great looking sites are coded in a text editor?

56Kbps modem getting a connection in the high 40's (I think) via IOL NoLimits (yes... still) - Opera 5.12 for Boards.ie and a few other sites (zoomed to 150%, usually, for Boards.ie) - IE 5.5 for practically everything else. Netscape has gotten nowhere near this PC in many months.

512k? Surely the internet must lose it's fun at that speed? It's like drinking coffee with 10 spoons of sugar... no difference in taste than with 2 spoons!

I recently downloaded opera to check compatibility etc, have to say Opera is a very good browser. I was wondering why you would go on about it, Bard, so much (coz you do go on about it a lot biggrin.gif) But quite justified now I see. I particularly like the mouse shortcut controls... right click+move mouse left= go back. If it can just see Java like any other self respecting browser it will be my first choice browser.

It aint over 'til the fat lady sings...

Oh but it can... there's a Java enabled version- it's just about 7Mb bigger wink.gif

Actually that version I downloaded, Bard, but still having problems with Java. I may need to download MRJ from Sun as the help index suggests.
Very nice in-browser search engine too eh? Maybe I should start an "I like Opera" topic! Maybe this is Java but some links don't work in Opera, d'you get that too? Very annoying, though I'm sure it's all in the bug fix soon, man, gimme my fix of bugs, man, just a small hit, c'mon biggrin.gif
