I'm probably way off, but I thought iTunes acted as a go-between for PC's and iMacs, that is to say, the iPod works with the iTunes program and it doesn't matter what system you have.

You can't take music off the iPod with iTunes, its designed so that you can't.
You can however (not sure if I'm allowed say this, but meh) go into the pod when selected as a drive, and make sure you can view hidden folders and the dir with all the music should be there. It'll be in about 30 different folders I think, and files are stored completly randomly. For instance if you want to take one album off you have to go through each folder and pick out each song, or search for each song.

The Ipod probably has an apple partition table and a Mac filesystem (HFS+ or UFS). Windows isn't able to read Apple partitions or filesystems by default but there should be software that allows you to do it. There was a thread about reading MAC formatted zip disks on this forum a while back. The information/tools mentioned there should work for the Ipod too.

    EDIT:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=189291

Also the Ipod appears to use an apple style partition table and HFS+.

Unless you did something to it, the pod should be in its default state and be readable by the pc.

Do you not have all the music backup'd to another pc anyway? Surely formatting wouldn't be a problem.

there are free tools available to copy the music from the IPod to PC - CopyPod would be an example, available here http://www.ipodlounge.com/downloads_windows.php

Then get some software to mount your ipod's Mac partition on windows. Something like Macopener should do - http://www.dataviz.com/products/macopener/

I believe you can get a trial of it from a download of ephpod (an alternate to itunes for organising you ipod's music) - http://www.ephpod.com/download.shtml
