The title of this photo "Niamh preparing for a party", looks more she is going to jump out the window. She is standing like a statue no expression (depression maybe), the skin tones are not good her face much darker then her neck. You have'nt even got a nice background. You should look at sites like photosig.com that will give you some tips on how too shoot DECENT portraits.

I think the difference in skintone is due to make-up not the lighting of the shot.

It doesn't really look like she's excited about going to this party.

The orangutans with the disposable camera, in your other gallery, are much nicer shots.
Althought i hope you weren't the one that gave them the camera.
They could do themselves a mischief.

    Thanks for your replies.

No, she was looking forward to going to the party but she was quite nervous because she ran out of time (women and their make-up and cloths and I don't know what...)

It actually looks quite nice printed out. Keep in mind this was shot with a point & shoot piece of crap camera on auto setting under bad light conditions from a time when I had none to very little photog skill.

@heffsarmy: the next time you call a photo of my wife indecend I will kick your butt (just kiddin, maybe...)

The fastest way to improve this would be to convert it to B&W and add some graininess.

Also perhaps defocus the background so the eye is not drawn to irrelevant detail (like the books) - although you could leave the fluffy turtle thing in focus for amusement.

you used 1/2 second exposure without a tripod, so the shot looks blurred.
    was that deliberate?

First of all the subject is good. The natural light upon Niamh is also good.
But photo is crowded with the blue bed and the book shelves, and the other stuff. Also the background could have done with being out of focus. All this detracts from the the good subject matter of the photo
