    A hectare consists of 10to the power of 4, square metres!.

    (i) Calculate the number of hectares in 1 square kilometre. (1km = 10 to the power of 3).

    (ii) Ireland has an area of 83426 square kilometres. How many hectares in Ireland?

    (iii) It is generally accepted that an economically viable farm must contain a minium of two hundred hectares of land. Calculate the maxium number of economically viable farms in Ireland?

    (iv) If a typical detached house requires a building site of 0.25 hectares, calculate the maxium number of detached houses which can be constructed in Ireland?

    Please note, i didnt know how to do the little number for a power.

    If anyone can help me through them few questions, i`d be most grateful. I can do the 1st 2 parts myself, but not sure if there correct. Im confused with the last 2 bits.

    Thanks, in advance.

    Um....

    iii. Since you've worked out how many hectares in all of Ireland, and you are told that a farm must contain a minimum of 200 hectares to be viable, you're asked - How many 200 hectare farms could you fit on the island of Ireland?

    Ditto for the House one.

    College questions? What course?

    If you're not sure of the first two bits, post up your answers and/or method and we'll tell you if you're right or wrong. :)

    I got 10000 metres for the 1st one. (i)

    Im having trouble with the 2nd,,, converting all to the 1 unit.

    @Seamus - I know the understanding of the 3rd question, i know whats being asked, but dont have the answer from 2 to use in question3. Sure work it out there, if you can!!

    what ever happened to discovery learning ?

    1 hectare = 100m x 100m = 10E4m2 (10^4square meters etc.)
    (i) 1km = 1,000m
    1km2 = 1,000m x 1,000m = (big number)m2

    (ii) 83426 square kilometres x no per hectare

    (iii) generally accepted by whom ? - have you checked the IFA web site ? - also farms in the west tend to be smaller and have poorer land than those in meath/golder vale. There is a farm on Collins avenue in Dublin and the land there is worth well over a million an acre. I guess they want you to figure out how many 200ha pieces the country could be split into ignoring mountains. roads, houses, bogs, lakes etc.

    (iv) 4 million, 'cos then every one will have their own house and demand will fall off somewhat.

    If you say you can do the first 2 bits then post your calculations thus far, proves you are are trying and it's the only way anyone could help you if you had made a mistake.

    (i)

    1 hectare = 10,000metres.
    1kilometre = 1000 metres.
    100hectares = 1kimoletre squared.
    1,000,000 = 1kilometre squared

    No. of hectares in 1 Km squared = 1,000,000 / 10,000 = 100 hectares.

    ????

    1Km2 = 100Hectare 2

    Instead just use Google. Enter "1km^2 in ha" as your search.
