    I was wondering does anyone know anything about the sport of Tug of War, maybe you think that you do. Most people think that it’s just a bit of crack at a festival for beer bellied men with a few pints in them. This however is far from the case. Threres more to Tug of War than just lying back on a piece of rope. Top Tug of War athletics train up to five nights a week in the run up to International events. The sport of Tug of War at national and international level requires strength, fitness and years of experience. There are 8-men on a Tug of War team. There is actually All-Ireland league of Tug of War with two divisions, 1 and 2. Currently there are approximately 30 teams competing in the national Tug of War league. The sports governing body here in Ireland is the Irish Tug of War Association (ITOWA). The ITOWA is affiliated to the Tug of War International Federation (TWIF). The outdoor Tug of war national championships are run over five Sundays during the summer. The weight categories vary in every event from 560kilo to 720kilo. The world Tug of War championships take place every 2nd year and the European championships every other year, therefore the sportsmen and women of the ITOWA get to travel and compete internationally every year. Ireland has a brilliant International record in Tug of War. We have yet to leave an international event without a medal of some colour either at club or international level. The top men from each team are selected to represent Ireland at the different weight categories. The top team in the country are the Boley from co. Wexford. Boleys international record speaks for itself; thirteen world championships, 12 second places and "11 or 12" thirds. This is the sort of thing Irish sport needs: top-line international success over a sustained period with the will to win being fuelled not by vast amounts of State resources, but by the single-minded determination of a group of men for whom success has become both a drug and a raison d'être. OK, so tug-of-war is not exactly among those sports at the top of television viewer ratings but like every sport it has its legends; Martin Kehoe, anchor man, Boley Tug of War team.
    Martin boasts a record that many sports personalities only dream of, Gold medals at both International and European level plus countless all-Ireland Div 1 gold medals. Martin has twice won the title of Ireland’s strongest man. He's won the national ploughing championship fourteen times and has twice been the world ploughing champion. Its legends like Martin which make a sport. Go on find out more about the sport of Tug of War by visiting;
