Hey this may sound stupid but its actually a really big issue for me.
im 22 and i look about 14(no exageration). i cant go to clubs and pubs without people coming up to me every 5 mins asking me what age i am and then having a good laugh at me. it really gets me down and wrecks my self esteem. Also i cant get a girl because what girl would go out with somebody that looks 14.

Becos this annoys me so much, i went to the doctor, my reason for this being the fact i have very little/no underarm hair and i still dont shave at 22.
My doctor just told me that everybody develops at different times but i think there must be something reallly wrong.
does anybody know anything i could do/take to speed up my development and help me lead a normal life?

I saw something on TV recently about an overlooked medical condition which causes slow growth by the body producing significaly low amounts of growth hormones. Not saying that you have this as you dont seem to have the symtoms, if you are worried about it maybe you could go another doctor just for a second opinion even. But this is hardly needed as you are most probably just a late grower and eventually fill out it just takes longer for some and its quicker for others nothing to worry about. Just work on your confidence and you will be ok., and as long as you have ID you can get into anywhere.

I'm the same, 19 but I look much younger. There was a guy working at my cousin's 21st last week who looked like he was 12 but he was actually 16. Listen to your doctor, people develop at different rates and you're just one of the late comers. I've heard of people who are 25 and like you. But you will grow to look your age, that is assured. At least, think how lucky you'll be when you'll genuinely look like a young 20 something when you're in your mid-30s!

Don't worry give it a bit more time.

While it may be precious little consellation to you at the moment- wait until you're a few years down the road and everyone will be jealous as hell about about you.

Yes, everyone developes at different rates. Kids these days seem to be grown up physically before they are grown up mentally- which can cause them no end of heartache because they don't know their arses from their elbows.

Take things easy, relax, all will happen in its own good time. Socialising does not end with pubs and clubs- there is a big wide world out there where you can be yourself without having to worry about your age or what you look like. If people have a problem with you looking young- that is their problem, not yours. I'd give my two front teeth to look ten years younger.

    Hang in there,

    S.

I'm curious. Have I missed something somewhere? Japanese? Someone watching too much Kill-Bill?

but think about it tho, when you 32 and look 24, what type of girl do you think you can get then?? hmm... I like that!!!

    I'm 27 and I look about 20, I'm very happy about that! wish I will only look 24 when I'm 32!!!

all the girls that are interested are all 18 or 19 as they all think I'm only 20 or 21, and the girls around my age thinks I'm too young for them just by looking at my 20yr face!!!! lol..!!

Would have to agree here, although if it worries you so much that you care to post about it and go to the doctor here is a good place where you can find out alot of information regarding growth problems. Its better to be safe then sorry and will help you know that you are ok. Hope this helps you. :D

I'm not sure going to a doctor is required unless you really want peace of mind. The general consensus is that males finish growing around 21 and women around 18 but to be honest this is a general guide and you can give or take 3 years either side to account for person to person differences.

I only finished growing and filled out at 21 and I still don't need to shave much (I'm 28). I look a bit younger I'd say.
To be honest low self esteem is as much of a turn off as anything else so if you focus on being happy with yourself all good things will come eventually.

yea i would think the same optikus and syke, if you want to go to the doctor then why not, no harm done, as well as that, worry about girls, dont worry coz when they actually find out your age, they probably like you more than you look older!

Thats why i posted that info for him to get the revelent info and peace of mind. To me it seems as he is quite worried about this, and what better way to put ones mind to rest, than by doing a bit of research himself and knowing for that it is normal and if there is a problem then for it to be nipped in the bud. There is absolutly no harm in this.

No that is not at all what you said, you posted scaring the poor chap with:

I can't see how you saying this is just for his peace of mind!

Its also (A) Medical advice, which is forbidden by the forum charter and (B) pretty uneducated advice.

To the poster, the first doctor was probably spot on and as I said, unless you feel there is something medically wrong I'd not worry about a 2nd opinon.

As I said before, work on liking yourself, because if you are hard on yourself then other people will be put off (or even worse, hard on you aswell) and remember, who cares what you look like? You KNOW how old you are and you can prove it. So long as you act your age who cares how you look?

Ok i did rush into it on the first post, its just that i heard something about these things on TV recently. My second post was usefull i am not trying to scare him at all, i agree he should work more on building his character and confidence i already stated that. Im not giving medical advice either i just posted a link to a site so he can rule out any symptoms he felt his doctor might of misssed. Please do not accuse me of trying to frighten him im just trying to give him some advice thats all.

I understand your frustration as I've been there. However, at 31 I still look younger than I am, I've been told 25 or 26, so it is in fact a good thing.

I know that that is no comfort to you now, but try not to worry about it, things will take care of themselves. So long as your fit and healthy, you shouldnt worry.

Just out of a matter of interest how is looking younger than your age a good thing for a man?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,439 ✭✭✭ando

I'm 23 and I'm told I look about 17. So what, I don't bother looking for women my own age, their mostly not interested, I'm after the 18 yr olds

[Father Ted] Lovely Girls [/Father Ted]

Sure it is a pain and is embarrassing when your asked for Id when your younger friends have no trouble getting into pubs and the like, but that’s just the way it goes sometimes. Things you wear defiantly have a bearing on how others see you. I find if I wear a black silky shirt, it makes myself look more mature. Wearing a tracksuit is just asking to be picked on.

Oh yeah it’s a f*cking pain going for job interviews, I've lost out by looking immature, it doesn’t matter what the f*ck is on your CV, first impressions and ... Murphy’s Law

i am actually very confident within my own group of friends but i just be embarressed meeting new people because of what they think.

I keep on shaving(even though i dont need to) because i have heard that this will make the facial hair grow quicker and thicker? this true?

I am considering buying some testosterone over the net to build me up and develop me quicker, i know a lot of you may think this is a bad idea but im desperate to sort tis out...

rufus, on the shaving thing - its a myth. The hair may appear to be thicker, but this is due to shaving, which cuts the hair at the base, which is the thickest part, therefore, when the hair continues to grow the top will now be as thick as the bottom was. The rate of hair growth as far as I know is unaffected. Seriously, you're only 19, don't do anything silly like buying testosterone over the internet. If you are worried, go see a doctor. Its not unusual for people to develop at different rates, I have a friend, (24) who has only really started shaving regularily in the last year.

Personally, I hate fúcking shaving, its a pain in the hole. And as others have said, youthful good looks are ALWAYS a hit with the ladies. Its easy to become overly focused on one thing, like this, but trust me you will look back and think what was the big deal.

rufus, are you skinny? Being skinny is a major cause of people looking younger than they are. People tend to look older with a bit of extra flesh on the face and neck, also for men having well developed chest/back/legs/arms will make them look older and more manly And this is something that you can do something about relatively easily. Join a gym, lift heavy weights, eat like a horse and you will put on weight and importantly much of the weight you put on will be lean muscle mass. You'll get more respect from both men and women because you'll be more manly and less boyish looking. You'll also feel more confident about your appearance and yourself generally.

You should not try the Testestorone supplements there is a lot of heath risk's including a greater risk of getting prostate cancer, among others.
As for the shaving, you can do if you want but it wont work it is as someone stated an Old wifes tale.
It cant be all that bad looking younger, especially in later years, you will most probably be glad of it.
Just wait it out a few more years and you will be fine, if it bothers you that much don't do something stupid like trestosterone just go to another doctor.

Man, doing the above can make things worse.
    1. Getting to the point where you need to shave every day is a holy nightmare and hassle every morning unless you choose not to do it and (unless you can pull off designer stubble) will lead to less girls being interested. Be glad you don't have to shave every day - i wish i didn't need to.

    2. shaving every day will dry out and **** your skin right up. If your susceptable to spots this will bring on a whole new world of them...and girls wont be interested.

Your best off looking forward to being young looking when your old, and waiting for that girl (she will come) that doesn't think, "wow he looks young," but "wow, he's cute".
And before you say "I don't wanna be cute" its better than being ugly and being referred to only as "aw, he's dead on though". The second one i can relate to. (and perhaps the first one, but i reckon the girls are more careful when saying that i'm ugly). :D

PS stay away from additional hormones - don't **** with nature - she ****s back, hard.
