I was just wondering if anyone here is a regular in Fibbers on Parnel St in Dublin. I go there every single Saturday and most fridays. Brilliant Craic and they nearly always play a very variation of Music. I'll be there tonight if anyone wants to hook up.

I used to go every week without fail when it actually kicked ass.

    1994-1998.

I'll be the dirty old man with the leer and trenchcoat with nothing underneath, staring at the young people. See you there?

I'm afraid I'll have to concur with Igy here... Avoid at all costs. I'm far more a bruxelles head myself whenever I'm in dublin.

Have to agree, Fibers is sh1t these days, one look in the door and you can see that. It was good years ago and when I was a teenager. But that said the bouncers and barmen were pretty much all ****. As for Bruxelles, I think it's sh1t too. Full of ageing rockers and they have the worst bar staff I've ever come adross in any pub.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

What's wrong with aging rockers? EXPLAIN YOURSELF!

Pff, I don't know, these young'uns, they could stand to learn a thing or two from their elders...

Agreed. The same fat balding rockers who were there 10 years ago, and they still wear the same biker jackets and faded "Ride the Lightning" t-shirts.

Bruxelles is even worse than Fibbers

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,921 ✭✭✭✭Pigman II

Amen to that. Bruxelles (downstairs) is a kip full of mostly boring inarticulate sad-sacks who seem to think it's still 1989. I'll still go into the ground floor for a late pint if the situation dictates but that isn't much better .... 'indy music' the order of the day it seems?

Used to go to the downstairs good bit years ago when I was young and it was good (or maybe I was just impressionable?). Anyway as the years passed I'd only go once a year on St Patricks day due to a tradition. Now I wouldn't be seen dead in that boring basement hellhole.

I remember I spent a new years eve in there once (98?99? I can't remember .. it must have the year that South Park ChefAid album came out because that's what they played at 5 to) and I'm not kidding but there was about 150 blokes and 5 women in the place when the clock hit midnight.

Potentially awakward you may think but fortuitously 3 of 5 were over at my table.

fibbers used to be alright when the beer garden was open, but its a dive now, full of heads who have 'problems' and want to talk, and too many matrix kiddies that think if they wear a long black leather jacket that they'll be able to do kung fu like neo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,483 ✭✭✭Töpher

Fibbers is a dive. It's full of "trendy rockers" IMHO, the I grew my hair cuz I don't like my mommy sort. The music is abysmal too. Not much else to be said tbh. Generally full of muppets, with shít music, who all go 'nuts' (my fúcking arse!) when Enter Sandman is played for the 22nd time that evening. Bleh... :(

I doubt they could be classed as trendy rockers though if they go to Fibbers.

Last time I went in there was for the craic while waiting for a film in UGC, 9pm saturday night, not a single trendy rocker in sight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,483 ✭✭✭Töpher

Did you talk to anyone? Anyone can "look" non-trendy, but the attitude and personality of alot of people there seems to be like Music Centre kids, I don't like my mommy and daddy and Metallica are amazing kind of bull. Talk to any of them and you'll see my point,

I have to say ive never seen a more negative and biased view of fibbers in my life. If you think that fibbers is full of neo wannabee's and trendy rockers then your oune of those guy's that walks in looks around and doesn't say hello to anyone. every person that i know going to fibbers can talk to anyone in there and have a great night in the mean time. Oh and by the way its under new management at the minute.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,217 ✭✭✭FX Meister

It's negative for a reason, and by biased you mean people are giving their view based on their experience of the place? It's still a bit of a dingy run down hole, new management or not.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,723 ✭✭✭empirix

Ah Fibbers - god be with the days - i may pop in soon for old times sake - since i am heading away for a few years in November. Many a good night in there playing pool, tripping etc.
Were any of you lads in there the night the singer from alice in chains(now dead) was up boppin on the dance floor.
So many faces i remember, who i don't see around anymore - i wonder if some will still be there.
    Metal up you ass boys!

I've been there with large groups of people, TALKED to alot of people (as I fúcking said you tit) and still reached the same conclusion, the majority of people there are wannabes, ie morons.

sorry but when exactly did you start going to Fibbers? Fibbers went downhill a long time ago, and this is from someone who drank and partied there for nearly a decade. Fibbers is now a complete joke of a place, was in there last year before Anthrax and god I felt like I aged about 25 years in the place - downstairs wasnt open at all and when it was (after the gig) they were charging people to get in downstairs.

And the very few times I have been in over the past few years, the only people I have ever seen have been the usual piss-heads that go in and play pool all night.

However that said, I went into Brux about 4 years ago and had a fantastic retro night - but thats cause I was up for some freaky beer garden antics :)

    It used to be that:
The best metal/rock bar of all times in Dublin was Charlies
    Tied for second was Brux/Fibbers

Now most people will say that it is
Brux first and Fibbers second - especially since Charlies closed all those years ago (1997 for anyone who is interested)

And I suppose your the all-powerful, all knowing super rock god who everyone should bow down before. What makes you think your so great that you think you can insult someone because he's defending something he likes. You know what you can do, you can f$ck off you stupid TIT!!!!!!!!!!

Remember that you started off somewhere and i'm sure more mature rock fans of that time were not impressed by what you were listening to at the time but you stuck to your guns.

Also i've been going to fibbers since 1998 when I first moved to godforsaken city. So i also knew it when it was very good. I just OBVIOUSLY got in with a decent group of ppl in there as I can enjoy myself there.

    Have Fun

OBIVIOUSLY with your maturity you found yourself a bunch of like minded individuals

OBVIOUSLY you have NOT listened to the fact that some of us, used to drink in there, and feel that it was going downhill from 1998 onwards

OBVIOUSLY you feel the need to attack people who look down on Fibbers (for shame on me and other people with fúcking opinions)

OBVIOUSLY no-one should have spoken ill of the mighty establishment known as Fibbers

OBVIOUSLY no other place will provide us with the intellectual stimulus that the Fibbers regulars could

OBVIOUSLY no one is allowed give their €0.02 about Fibbers, especially since you asked in the first place

    OBVIOUSLY you are

Lol, Ph3nom got it one one (or several there! :D).
From someone claiming that grouping Fibbers goers as immature and childish was wrong, you really did yourself wonders with the 4 year old-esque name calling! What a well thought out argument. The place is just very stereotypical, the people, the same songs week-in week-out, its hard to not despise it, especially after seeing the level of intelligence of a supposed 6-year regular. I find it hard to belive that you could actually, if what you say is correct, be in your twenties! Near mid-twenties at that! :(

My older brother used to go there alot then it kind of got boring so he moved on to Bruxelles, though I think he rarely drinks in there now.Seems like a nice place that Fibbers, when Im a bit older (or look the age) I might pop in and have a look around and see what its like...sounds like a shít hole but I may cheggit out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,770 ✭✭✭Bottle_of_Smoke

I go the odd weekend, its much better (busier) saturday nights, there's a lot of attention seeking going on in there, especially with one girl I *always* see there! she annoys me, i won't go into details.... Its an okay place, if you're into rock and like to dance a bit when you're locked it's ideal

Einsturzende maybe if you stopped paying so much attention to these "wannabes" (f*cking hate that term) they might stop annoying you so much, what places do you like?

    Eh, no.
Fibbers BECAME crap in 1998 when they started doing renovations and closed teh beer garden. It was good (brilliant actually) between 1994-1998 - then about 300 of the regulars left - then it sucked. people who go there now are just douchebags.

Sounds like it started to suck as soon as Eldarin started going there. Eldarin always ruins all the fun. Such a buzz kill.

I think most people who went there agree that from about 98 onwards was when fibbers completely started to suck ass.
I went there for a couple of years, stopped going in 98. It was really great back in the day, many a memorable night spent singin on top of a table in the beer garden lol. However, even back when it was good, the place was still a urine soaked dump, and the pints were piss poor. (and thats an insult to piss to compare it to a fibbers pint).
It sucks ass now, the last time i was in i asked the dj to play angel of death...he played the final countdown. I think that says it all.
On a side note, anyone remember that creepy guy pat, with the long hair, moustache and leather jacket with a pink floyd album cover on the back? What a piss head lol.

Firstly i would like to apologise for my outburst earlier in this thread I hate being insulted without provocation. And to add to that I hate being called a TIT. (I know now that this is pretty much an invitation for everyone here to call me a TIT now, Please Don't) There are other reasons i'm not going to disclose but i replied a little hastily to the comment. Again my apologies.

In reference to the above quote I am 25 years old and have been going to fibbers actually since July 19th 1997, the day I moved up here.

Is that the small girl with the spiky mohawk or the girl that can't stop walking around in her bra.

Anyways I don't want to be pictured as the annoying **** on this forum.
    So there's my 2cents.
