I'd say Contact. Anyone think of any others?

Contact is the one where it starts off with a picture of the world and music on some radio station. Then it zooms out further and further and the radio broadcasts change the further out they move until you hear the world games speech.

Contact? Hmmm can't quite remember that one myself...was that the sequence where her dad died? Ah well, no matter.

Best opening 15 minutes oif a film ever goes to "The Great Escape" all the escape attempts made during that short period of time..plus steve McQueen's ever classic

must say that gladiator has a fairly rocking opening scene

FightClub has a good opening. From inside the brain to outside and down the barrel of the gun thats in Ed Nortons mouth.
The inside of the brain is all correct and confirmed by medical people. Weird.
    *Update*
Having seen Saving Private Ryan for the first time a few hours ago, I think it has one of the best opening scenes.

best opening scene i think (to the best of my knowledge) would have to be

    SPACEBALLS

when it takes the p1ss out of star wars and the ship passes for like the entire of the first minute and then we see thats its only a small tiny ship lol

    brilliant

Im Going to Thrash you to within an Inch of your Life.....................

Ok, not exactly amazing watching them all playing soccer while that's being said, but for an opening narrative, that's my favorite.

But then Fight Club is not without its charms smile.gif

The opening to Gladiator from the quiet of the wheat field to the massed ranks of the legions with that brilliant sound track in the background.

You left out the bit where Hiltz is escorted into his cell. German Guard closes cell door.
German guard then opens cell door. Hiltz hands cell door keys to guard.

Blade Runner's Opening sequence is quite catching. The future is so bleak and dreary.

Opening credits of Bullet are brilliantly done especially for its time. Love that Lalo Schiffren music.

Opening and closing shots of One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest. Both the same, pretty cool that.

The Ski sequence at the start of the Spy Who Loved Me is pretty cool, especially the last jump off the side of the cliff. Good Stuff.

Any of the Indiana Jones Films.
I love the fades from the Paramount pic to mountains or the gong. I also love the way in Temple of Doom its got this really irrelevant big dance number immediately followed by the fiasco with the diamonds and stuff. And the bit in Raiders where Indy goes to get that rock thing, then the big ball chases him and the natives chase him as a huge army.
    I love those films smile.gif

Yeah, I'd say Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator, Fight Club or Blade Runner.

For such an important part of a film, you'd think directors/producers/whoever would spend more time and effort...

    All the best,

Just saw Fight Club for the first time last night, and a great movie and all as it is, I wouldn't class it as best of the year. The opening sequence, however, is one of the most intriguing and best written I've ever seen.

If you're looking for a thrill-packed exciting action opening sequence, mind you, you can't go wrong with Bond in Tomorrow Never Dies.

Saving Private Ryan for the intensity and realism. Start Trek First Contact for the cinematic excellence. The pull back from Picards eye out of the borg cube and beyond is the longest one ever. It was very cool.

Raiders of the Lost Ark. The booby-trapped tomb/rolling boulder/mad dash from natives does it every time.

Agree with all of the above, especially for mentioning the Contact opening. Another suggestion, the opening sequence of Speed, with the elevator. Sets things up nicely.

Im going to the bear fights tomorrow, want to come with ??

    Magnolia!

For sheer and utter weirdness, it sets you up nicely for a really weird film.

i love the contact opening seq, personal favorite of mine smile.gif
But are we talking about openening sequences or credit sequences?
The se7en credit sequence was a bit good. as was fight club.
Also someone mentioned the bit in contact when her dad died. That one long stedicam shot is superb, theres an invisble cut to a reverse angle in it (as she runs up the stairs afair)

Another late entry is Fearless: with Jeff Bridges and a kid and a couple of other people walking through a field of grass looking quite dazed.

You don't know what they're up to until they start passing pieces of airplane wreckage - if memory serves there's no music or anything, the overall effect is very striking.

    Already mentioned:

    Magnolia
    Fight Club
    2001
    Run Lola Run

    Not already mentioned:

    Man on the Moon
    Being John Malkovitch
    Event Horizon
    The Commitments

Do your limbs ever get tingly, eh? eh?

    oooh ooh oooh Fearless.

Great, great, great movie. One of my all time favourites.

have to agree with Castor on the opening. Striking. And what follows is so brilliant it should be seen by all.

If you don't like it you're probably thick as a plank

    lol. charming lebowski hehe.
I think Carlitos way opening is kinda cool, initially with him on the stretcher after being shot: "somethings pulling me close to the ground,i can sense but i cant see."
or maybe raging bulls, thot the film in general was a little overrated but the opening is class, with him shadow boxing in the ring, very stylish biggrin.gif
