trying to set up an apple airport express with an apple ibook laptop (osx)
and with eircom dsl for a friend, but cant get it to work, as you can imagine eircon were useless when phoned earlier, "air what???", i know nothing about macs so im at a bit of a loss as to what to do as the apple www is even more useless than eircon, has anyone else managed to get this set up correctly??

(depending on the modem) all you *should* need to do is plug the Ethernet cable from the modem into the Express and using the AirPort Admin Utility under:

AirPort: Configure the AirPort Network settings (Channel, Name, Security etc)
Internet: Connect using Ethernet - Using DHCP (or Manually if the modem isn't distributing IP details via DHCP)
Network: Distribute IP addresses - defualt is single IP using DHCP/NAT (or choose your IP sharing/distribution strategy)

best to set it up open to make sure you can connect from the iBook, then configure security: WPA (if the iBook has an AirPort Extreme card and other clients support WPA) or WEP (if an original AirPort card or other clients don't support WPA), set-up your access control list, create a closed network etc... and change the default admin password

although if it is one of the early eircom modem's (that doesn't allow the account details to be entered on it) you may have to set the Express up with the PPPoE account settings, so under
Internet: Connect using PPPoE - Enter the relevant eircom account details

make sure you have the latest AirPort Admin utility from Apple (4.01) (check downloads or sys update), perhaps check out Designing AirPort Networks (p35) [PDF]

have found the Express a little flaky to configure for a WDS - but hopefully some updates will solve that though

yeah it's sweet - was demoing the Express last week for the Irish Mac Users group and it got a lot of interest - AirTunes especially went down a treat - managed to sort the Wireless Distribution System for my mate too so it's now happy extending the range of his existing Airport Extreme Base Station set-up - a very versatile piece of kit that looks nice and fits into a jacket pocket :)
