Analyzing crashes?

Quick, general question: What feedback can I get from Fedora concerning system crashes? My new laptop seems to crash randomly while booted into Fedora and I want to try and trace the problem to see if its software related before I take the matter further, as a hardware issue with it would be out of my hands.

I did a grep of /etc/var/log/messages, but there's nothing there that's related to it.

Anyways, what further steps can I take in searching for this and taking steps to resolve it?

Patch and proggy-wise, I patched up fully through yum, downloaded Gnome 2.8 and KDE 3.3 through apt, installed Firefox, Clamscan and Tripwire and that's about it, really. Its plugged into my router, but I'm using a decent iptables script. Clamscan and chkrootkit both came back clean and Tripwire hasn't gone off, so I don't believe its security related, which leaves, for me software conflict or faulty hardware.

install metalog, and have a look at other logs, like erm , Xorg log and such, x can mem leak and generally do bad stuff.
Usually there will be tell tale signs, like module conflits or such an app is trying to access hardware diretly .etc/

Well it turns out that APM and ACPI aren't working correctly on my laptop, so when it gets hot the fan doesn't kick in, which in turn causes the machine to crash after its been on for a while. I've been looking at serveral solutions-including compiling my own kernel (2.6). While that did net me a nifty increase in preformance, it hasn't solved my core problem. I also updated the laptop's BIOS sucessfully, also without problems.

However, right now though I'm sick as hell so I'll leave off tinkering with it until tomorrow. This is the laptop in question. I'm running Fedora Core 2, 2.6 kernel, the 1.50 BIOS and also dual booting to Windows XP Pro.

yeah ACPI affects alot of things ; even people's usb sticks have been known to start working properly when its turned off

try turning it off on boot to see how it performs (just to see)

on grub boot, ESC to go in and edit , and set acpi=off

I'm compiling a new kernel right now and I've noticed that even now the fan is screwy. If I boot up, let the laptop get hot enough that it needs the fan and then reboot, the fan will run. Otherwise, not at all. Annoying as hell.
