LCD recommendations?

I'm looking at getting a 17" LCD monitor, like the syncmaster 172x at http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=121957&view=detailed

Can anyone recommend a good LCD monitor that has a 12/16ms response time, good constrast, no dead pixels if possible? Also a good supplier - komplett are great but if there's a good place in Dublin I'd like to see a monitor before I buy it.

Also, if anyone has a good LCD monitor, do you find it easier on your eyes? I find that CRTs strain my eyes after a while.

the new sony tft has 16ms, very nice screen, its a bit high price, but its well worthy

I think that 16ms is pretty typical nowadays. Where did you buy it and how much was it?

I was close to buying one a month or two ago, I had settled on a Viewsonic VP171b, but that Samsung Syncmaster came very close too.

They have good comparisons on www.tomshardware.com

if you just wanna walk in to a shop and pick it up right away peats stock the sony ones, very nice screen, but pricy, around 800, but sure you can get a better price online!

My tip about LCDs is whether you buy on the net or not try the monitor at a shop that sells it. I bought a LCD without trying it and couldn't get on with it at all, response was too slow for me and my eyes got sore quickly.
At work we have HP/Compag screens and they seem pretty good.
If you want an LCD for gaming it needs to be quick.
Good luck and tell us how you get on!!! :D:D:D

    Thanks folks,

I'm off to America (Florida & NY) in 2 days so maybe I'll have a look at buying one there. I guess they're bound to be cheaper than here... assuming I don't get slapped with huge taxes trying to bring it home that is.

Syncmaster 710N is the one i went for. excellent screen 12ms response time 1280x1024 @ 75Hz and a 0.264 dot pitch all for €389 on komplett...

go get it i have checked out all the available competition and i didnt find anything that i was happy with. Its samsung and i honestly believe that you cant go wrong with them...

Yeah, I was looking at the 710V, (which is similar to the N I think) but I couldn't find any decent reviews or details on the web. Also these displays are analog-only, so there's no DVI connection - looking at some reviews I think this might lead to a big drop in display quality (?)

The price is pretty tempting though :D

Did you have any problems with stuck/dead pixels?

Just looking at one on Elara.ie -
    http://www.elara.ie/products/detailsfull.asp?productcode=ECE974645&productID=
    Philips 17" TFT 12ms.

Is there some sort of mistake with the pricing .. €177.49 inc VAT seems way lower than any others.

That's pretty cheap alright! I think it might be a mistake, but I just mailed them and asked.

Can't find any decent specs on it thought.....

tried to add one to cart to see delivery prices on that and it says stock isn't arriving until at least Nov 5th. Still looks like a mistake pricewise, though..

    The Samsung 21" (213t) has a refresh of 25ms, but it's huge! :D
Though by the time I could afford it, I'm too slow to play fast games anymore...

Friend of mine got the 21"...stupid price. I couldnt spend that much on a screen to be honest. The response time is crap for games apparently. He loves it though. Huge screen. you may as well get a 22" CRT with a much higher range of stats that spend a grand on a (doubtful) space saver... Though he did spend €4000 on a new pc so you can imagine what else he got...

The 710N is a very good screen. I like Samsung a lot so i dont have any complaints about it. The lack of Digital is something to complain about but its not the end of the world. In my experience i can run any game ever made in 1280x1024 @75Hz with every setting up full and i dont get any lag. I will put it this way: Doom3 is no problem. Its worth getting a better screen if you have the money. The Samsung isnt a replacement for €500 screen but i have never seen anything with specs like this for €450 or lower:

    *12m/s response time
    *0.264 Dot Pitch
*75Hz refresh rate at max res

I read 3 or 4 reviews for this screen and all i ever read was that it was perfect for games and a brilliant screen...It runs games better than i have seen before because i upgraded from a crap pc. I think everything looks fantastic but you would have to have experience to compare it with if you really want to know whats its like.

In fairness though the only thing that bugged me was the Res...1280x1024 isnt overly impressive for games but i run my desktop in 1024x768 anyway so unless you are very into every little detail being full then dont worry about it.

hmm anyone know what jes is like for shipping costs ? think I actually saw another post for this somewhere..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 407 ✭✭Mec-a-nic

I bought a Lian-Li case from JES (the only e-tailer that had anodised black...). They charged me E 23 shipping for the 8kg package. They will hold back your order until all of your items are in stock, which keeps down costs/increases wait time... I was happy with the service.

I just saw this BenQ 17" TFT on JES for €355 plus 20 odd for delivery. 12ms response time - not too shabby. Haven't seen any reviews on it though.

Just read a review on tomshardware.com . Good review. Would be suitable for most people it said
