    Hi all,
I'm looking for a good amp/receiver to build up my home entertainment system. I've got Panasonic TX36PD30 with Pioneer 575A DVD player. I'm looking at the KEF speakers or Moduant short, but looking for an appropriate receiver. Any suggestions?

I would recommend the Sony STR-DB790

Peats have it but it is €469

I can get this delivered to my house for £226 sterling (about €330).

I'd recommend a sony receiver about as much as a kick in the nuts... :)

If possible stay away from the consumer only level brands like sony/philips and so on. Look at what marantz/pioneer/denon/harmon kardon have in your price range. Also look for a minimum of 6.1 output as more DVDs become encoded this way.

For the price of the Sony look at the Marantz SR4500 or Marantz SR5400 priced around €450. But if you can stretch to it take a look at the Pioneer VSXAX3. Its €900 in Ireland but a fine machine even at that price. Genuine 7.1 THX receiver

I have its bigger brother the AX5 which is a stunner. I love it to bits. I also love the fact that I paid only €750 for it

I second what Mayshine says, avoid Sony. You can do so much better with Denon/Pioneer/Marantz for the price. The Marantz SR5400 works particularly well with the KEF KHT2005 series speakers, if they are the ones you are going for. If not, post up the models of the speakers.

The Sony is a fantastic receiver for the price (obviously over here as it is a lot cheaper). It eats the similar priced Harman Kardon. Not so sure about the competing models from Marantz or Denon as I have not heard either.

these mags don't share your distain for the STR-DB790

    Home Cinema Choice

    What Video & Widescreen TV

What Hi-Fi Sound & Vision gives the STR-DB790 as it's best buy for the class and recommends the following entry system

    Sony STR-DB790 Receiver
    Pioneer DV-575A DVD Player
    Mordaunt-Short Genie 5.1 Speakers

Maybe you are right, and I am just a bit of a snob when it comes to this, but I couldn't face a Sony sitting in my HT setup.

Anyway you need to listen to them all to form an opinion. What sounds good to one person might sound poor to another. However any time I have listened to Sony it has fallen far short of what more focused brands produce. Maybe this new Sony is the real deal

For the euro price of the sony here in Ireland, I think the marantz is far better value. If you can strech to a denon such as the 1803/1804 - Review that might be worth checking out also.

I'd go along with you A Dub in Glasgo. I have two Sony receiver amps one in livingroom and the other in the bedroom. Have them over 8 years, the one in the livingroom operates 18 hours a day nearly seven days a week and has never missed a beat. For the money 150 pounds at the time they are great!!! :D:D:D

Take a look at the Yamaha DSP-AX750 or it's radio tuner equivalent of RX-V750. The DSP is €599 from richersouns.ie but you can get the RX-V for about €500 delivered from Germany.

hi, i'm not sure whether to tag this on to this thread or start or new one but...

has anyone any experience with the Yamaha DSP-AX750SE? would you recommend it? rang X-music and they don't stock amps usually so would have to order from the website / belfast. plus the website only has the other model, DSP-AX750, and not sure if the SE version is worth the extra money..

BTW am asking this for my boyfriend, dont know a damn thing about amps!! will pass on advice to him, cheers..
