I presume those from a non-MMA background will be matched against a MMA'er?

Not necessarily. Depends on whether non-MMA people step up to bat. You interested?

Out of curiosity, would there be a women's section?

    rainbow kirby,

There might be a few females interested. Alternatively UCD are hosting the final round of the 2004 Irish Amateur MMA League where there'll almost certainly be females competing in that. Email mark.leonard@siebel.com if you're interested in the league.

No. I was just curious as your original post said that the purpose was to test your art to see if what you are training in works, and I was wondering what would happen if several people from a traditional art showed up - I assume they would have to be paired against an MMA'er or at least someone from another art to be able to test their art. For instance there would be no point pairing up two Taekwon-do practitioners because all you'll get is a Taekwon-do sparring match.

Considering that NUI Galway TKD instructors Mark Leonard and Tom Haddock both fight MMA I doubt this is true (Mark is also organising the aforementioned MMA League and Tom is the Irish Light Heavyweight champion). Tim Murphy UL TKD instructor has also fought Vale Tudo twice at both previous MMA League events. The over-riding theme is that when TKD guys step into a full contact arena (either involving grappling or not) what they do doesnt look like traditional TKD or point sparring. Therefore two TKD guys in a ring fighting would look like MMA pure and simple (or like K1)!

For those that dont want to fight with grappling the ultimate kickboxing would be a good tester. It would allow a style, like TKD, that involves little or no grappling to test the striking aspects of their art in isolation!

God i'd love to do it but would prob get a bating ;)))

Unforuntunetly there is no full contact punches or kicks thrown in my JJ anyway. Still get injured but they are stupid things like falling hard or landing wrong/getting an arm bar on to much etc.

I've recently bought a boxing bag though, so Im training hard on that.. going every day min half hour(if im wrecked that day) avg bout an hour on it(breaks incl) ..

Colum i know this might not seem a lot to urself(not said in a begrudging manner) but what u think??? Should I just get involved in Kickboxing or what? Unfortunetly my times being consumed a bit, so another MA is not really an option. My chances for the competetion would be : ??

    Brian,

I think you might find making a debut in the aforementioned MMA league a lot less intimidating since you come from a JJ background. Since you arent used to striking this competition could suit you. Its very safe with no headshots allowed and is held in a sports hall on mats rather than in the boxing club.

You can find details on MMA League Info! Its a fun event and you'll learn a lot from it with little risk of injury!

Youd want to be sparring to really develop the skill needed to fight in the kickboxing. The bag work will blitz your cardio though but you wont help you develop crucial fight experience! Good work though! ;)

    thanks colum,

I've convinced a mate to do it, so for now i'll say im in, but Im gonna have to see nearer the date. You mention to fight in the kickboxing, presumebly you mean I'll be in the amature div and crap at standup fighting :) ? I know that my exp would be pretty NIL in that respect, however there is Kickboxing on in my college so I'll be joining that.. Have to get the cardio up, meaning im gonna start joggin a couple of nights a week(starting tonight, DEFINTLY)

If im not doing it, I'll def go to it, and see you there. But for now, Im in..

I'll be competing in either the under 85kg or under 90kg at the MMA league in November. Keep checking that website for info as to when applications have to be in (probably by the start of November)!

If you want to enter Ring of Truth 2, email John Kavanagh at ringoftruth@gmail.com and see what he thinks.

See how you get on with the kickboxing in college and talk to John about your experience. I'd recommend popping into Bridgestone, which would give you great striking! Theres only one kickboxing division, which is K1 rules. The amateur division is amateur rules MMA, which removes headshots on the ground!

I'll send you a PM with my details if you have any more questions or want more advice!

    You can indeed!

For Ring of Truth safety gear required is vale-tudo or MMA gloves, gum-shield and a groin guard! Handwraps are optional.

I think Mear and Colum are getting their wires crossed.

Mear if you have no Stand Up you're better off entering the MMA League. The closing date for entries is Nov 12th, so start getting them in now!

Last time I was talking to Tim I got the impression that he had ties to Tralee so that must be it.

9 years is a long time so you must be a good striker. Just keep the fight standing. I say go for it.

It sounds like fun. Think I will.
