chemotherapy for cats ?

My mothers cat was diagnosed with cancer of the lung the other day. The vets (in UCD) are giving her chemotherapy. She seems to be getting better. Has anyone else heard of this for pets? I thought they just put them down if they got cancer as it was too much stress for the animal ?
