Luas and bus link-ups

Looking at the luas website and some maps, I noticed that there are actually some suburban services that link up the Red and Green lines, e.g. the 75 and 19. There are also quite a few routes that, with minor amendment, could provide some very nice links, like the 16/A if extended to Dundrum station.

I'm working on revising the list from the luas site, which isn't very "intergrated". Comments welcome.

The frequency of the buses going to Sandyford (75, 114,...) are ridiculous... They should do something about it...
For the 75, they are leaving Dun Laoghaire at 6.50, 7.25, 8.15, 8.50 and 9.30!
    The 114, from Blackrock 7.10, 7.38. 8.05, 8.30, 9.00 and 9.30!
Roughly a bus every 30 minutes...

They should create a new line from Dun loaghaire to Sandyford with a maximum of 10 minutes between each buses, maybe less if they are using these small buses...

When you say 'working on', what exactly are you doing?

I wrote to Luas Customer Service in early July (or even June) about typos on the site, and other issues. I suggested that they provide direct links to Dublin Bus route pages.
I also suggested linking each station name to info about the station e.g. map (we don't all know exactly where each station is), facilities at station, nearby attractions/shops etc).

I put my suggestions on a web site and I can see that no one has visited the site.
I rang about a month ago and was told that the letter was forwarded to the web site developer shortly after it was received.
I plan to write again to ask about progress.

    Excellent idea daymobrew.
I suggest when you write again you formally copy the letter to the relevant official in the Department of Transport.
I think that this is a guy called Tom Ferris - he is responsible for QBC strategy and related issues at any rate. (A quick phone call to the Dept would clarify who you should write to anyway.)

I suspect that way you will get a quicker answer from Luas and maybe catch the imagination of the Dept.

Yeh do Dublin Bus not realise the potential, Sandyford Ind Est is huge. Most of the (big) companies in there have been forced to organise private bus services to Blackrock Dart Station at rush hour because the bus service is almost non-existent.

Are these services well used now that the luas is running?

has that bus lane from whites cross to the industrial estate been "officially" put in use?

the last few times i have driven along that road there was a load of "Bus Lane not is use" signs along the road

I've just had a novel idea. How bout Connex having the initiative to run a bus from the red line to the green one for Luas ticket holders.

Abbey Street to Harcourt and Harcourt to Rialto. Would be great.

No, the bus lane is still 'not in use' - God knows why they've put it in at all.

As someone who's worked in Sandyford for nearly 9 years, I can testify to it being incredibly badly served by public transport.

But didn't they just build a several hundred million euro Luas line in there for you.

Some people are just never happy! :D

Yes, I know...and as I crawl out of Sandyford every evening watching the gleaming Luas trams go by, I really wish I could afford to live somewhere along the Luas line.*Sigh*

Unfortunately there's a ton of people working here who live in other parts of south Dublin, which can only be accessed by public transport by either going into town and out again or using one of the totally inadequate 'cross-city' buses (e.g. 75, 116, 114)

And while am at it can anyone explain to me the logic behind a bus route as long as the one the 75 travels. It makes the timetable a complete work of fiction unless you are actually getting it in Tallaght or Dun Laoghaire.

For anyone who is on the red line to tallaght and works in CityWest, there is a feeder bus to and from the square in tallagh to citywest in the morning and afternoon.

Its run by a private company... €1 one way...

    Tallaght - Citywest
    7.15 a.m.
    7.45 a.m.
    8.15 a.m.
    8.30 a.m.
    8.45 a.m.
    9.00 a.m.
    9.30 a.m.

    Citywest - Tallaght
    16.30
    16.45
    17.00
    17.20
    17.30
    18.00

Purely as a hobbyist saying to myself "'ere, thats not right".

Just comparing www.luas.ie to www.dublinbus.ie and map indicates Luas misses about 30% of busses.

How long would it take for the feeder bus to go from tallaght to citywest. I need to be in work at 8am.

There is no real policy for public transport information in the Dublin area, is there? I mean, who's supposed to be in charge of it?

It's obviously a good idea to have a better list for Luas connections and so make the whole thing a little bit more transparent, but it really needs a more strategic, centralised view.

As an example, on your list you mention the 5 bus. Realistically, the frequency of this bus is so low as to make it practically useless for anyone who needs to make connections. Listing this bus as 'connecting' with the Luas is creating the impression that there is a service there, when there basically isn't. Much the same goes for the 86, 115 and 116.

The on-line DB timetable says there is no such route as the 112. Perhaps it is one of the special simulated buses operated by BE?

I know that you are concentrating on urban/suburban, but surely it is worth at least mentioning the aircoach connections and the connections with services to further afield (obviously the BE services, but also other relevant services, such as the St. Kevin's service to Roundwood)?

Regarding 'that bus lane' I expect that it's been postponed until the M50 is finished.Until then, that stretch of the Leopardstown Road is in effect carrying all the traffic that would prefer to stay on the motorway. When it opens, they'll probably redraw the lines on the Leopardstown Road to undo the recent changes and then open the bus lane.

Oops, their error, I think it's meant to be the 122.

am i right in thinking that there are NO buses that actually go into the Red Cow Luas terminus to pick up / drop off? On the Luas the automatic message says 'connect here for Dublin bus and Bus Eireann' but where exactly is the nearest bus stop?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,107 ✭✭✭John R

    On the Naas road.

For Bus Eireann does that mean the stop after Newlands Cross ? If so, that is a fair hike from Red Cow - and you'd need to cross the Nass Road twice to get to it?

In the great scheme of Irish Intergration you will notice that there is "bus stops" next to the tram stop at the Red Cow Tram stop.

The only problem is - no buses serve them, therefore it can hardly be called a "transport interchange". I believe the problem lies firmly at the DoT as DB and BE have to apply to Kildare Street for route changes, schedule changes etc.
