Ping issue

Why is that when I try to ping www.boards.ie (or any other site for that matter) I get a 'destination net unreachable' message ?

On the same note - if I'm playing say COD MP, it doesn't list the ping times, only 'unknown'...are these problems related. Is there a setting somewhere needing set/unset.

    Thanks.

GOOD GOD (WO)MAN! Get yourself a firewall!

Are the ports blocked by your router? Try sticking a post in a comp->net comms forum. All the networking heads hang out there. :)

Boards.ie won't return pings any more, apparantly lots of people were using it to test pings and the server was under enough strain already. As for other sites perhaps you're connecting through a proxy server or its possible your broadband modem (if you have one) has a firewall enabled.

They do for me .. so maybe I'm special? Have you source for that info? Maybe it was just temporary?

TemplarBarna, if you are using eircom dialup, they regularly block pings (to any site). Its their answer to curbing spam/virus spreading (geeks: form circle, hold hands, and laugh). So if you are on eircom dialup, that's (unfortunately) to be expected.

Ecksor blocked ICMP on boards' firewall a few weeks ago. As stevenmu points out the server was responding to a massive number of pings at the time.

Not being able to ping other sites means that you are firewalling them off somewhere. Perhaps you recently installed a windows service pack or patch that changed your Windows firewall settings (WinXP SP2 does AFAIK).

It was in the feedback forum Here. I think I saw somewhere that there's a new server up so maybe they allow it again now.

I'm running win2000. It is an eircom dialup, but I also have this setup at my home home and ping times show up in COD, or BHD.
