ipod question

Not sure if this is the right forum, if not pls move. Can ipods only transfer MP3s using their own proprietary software? In other words do you have to either own the songs on CD or buy them through itunes, or can you transfer MP3s you have got from other sources (e.g.your mate's band)?

any mp3s can be put onto an ipod. there's no right's management protection as of yet.

Just import them into iTunes.
