I am thinking of buying Canon's teleconvertor lens for my Powershot A80 digital camera. It's the one that offers an additional 2.4x zoom when attached to the front of the camera.

I got the chance to play around with one in Gunns yesterday so I formed some impressions. It was late enough so the light was poor and my cold hands were shaking too much to take steady shots. At a distance the lens seemed to work fine. However I did see that the camera could not autofocus on relatively close objects (say inside 2-3m).

But does anyone else know much about these? Do you know of problems or shortcomings with them and can you make any recomendations?

I got a tele and a wideangle for my Fuji digital. Didnt find them much use at all, the wide even had terrible barrel distortion.

From what I know of teleconverters, this sounds normal as the teleconverter probably won't work throughout the full zoom range of the camera. Eg if your camera has a 5x zoom lens and you get a 2.4x TC you'll get 2.4 x 5 at full telephoto. But if you set the camera zoom to say 2x or less and then attach the TC, you could get poor results making the camera unusable in this configuration.

As for comments on the particular lens your interested in why not head over to www.dpreview.com and post a query in the Canon forum. You're almost guaranteed to find somone there who has experience with your exact camera and with the TC you're looking at.
