    hi all,

i'm heading off to new york for a week soon,
and was wondering if i should get anything while i'm over there.

it computer gear MUCH cheaper over there?
or is it not worth the hassle for saving a few pennies?
any suggestions on what to get?
is there any big PC stores in new york?

Stuff is generally cheaper over there and there is no VAT (except for sales taxes in a few specific states). Technically speaking you are supposed to declare your purchases in Irish customs and pay vat if they exceed a certain amount (I'm unsure of the threshold).

Obviously, you should be careful when buying any item that interfaces directly with the US electrical system as it probably won't work over here.
Something like an Ipod should be quite a bit cheaper over there and will be easy to bring back on your flight. I'm not sure what the situation with the power adaptors on an Irish electricity supply is though.

there is limit to the amount of new stuff you can bring back....think wayne rooney's bird fell foul of the english equivalent the other day.

Make sure if you do buy anything to open it and hide the receipts so you can claim you didn't actually buy it in the states if need be.

Buy a laptop. You can get a top of the range laptop that would cost 2500 here for about 1500 over there and you can just tell customs that you brought it over with you for business.

Avoid best Buy and the like prices there are dearer than here, there is one shop its an off shoot of Walmart which is membership only. you can buy a one day pass but the life of me i cant recall the name of it.
I got a high spec laptop in there Sony VAIO €2999 here was $1100 in that shop.

To buy a full PC in Walmart is cheap as **** but components are dearer dunno why.

When you get your laptop throw out box etc and bring it on plane in land luggage when you get back ti ireland apply for the tax back from here just a matter of sending all your reciepts and takes a while. Avoid any taxes if lappy is on plane and went over with you ;) And get tax back on it too :)

Also anyone you meet in shops buying food ask them fo their receitps and send them in also , i made about €1000 doing that using families xmas shopping receipts as my own.

Guy I know was stopped with a high-end graphics card coming back from the states. It was confiscated and they made him pay VAT. He only recieved the card about 3 weeks later.

NY is full of small electronics stores selling all sorts of gadetry and alot of them will try to rip you off in all sorts of creative ways if they think you're a tourist. If you buy anything in these stores think very carefully about the value your getting and look very carefully at what you're getting or that very generous free 512MB flash card he kindly threw in to get you to buy will turn out to be a 16MB card when you get home, if you catch my drift ;)

handy that can price them here and in normal US stores , Compaq lappies are fairly genereic so part no will match others.
