where to find very small sizes

My mother is looking for a coat for an elderly relative. She wants a plain wool coat, nothing "trendy".

The woman in question is very small and has tried on size 10 (no idea about ladies sizes so bare with me) in a coat but has found it too big. Seemingly she is a size 8.

She found one size 8 but it was the big check patterns that seem to be "in" at the moment.

I was just wondering if anybody knew of a place that sells a range of small sizes in coats?

She has tried childrens sections in shops but they are stocking very few coats the season apparently.

She also rang a few places that supply school uniforms in Dublin but seemingly they don't wear wool coats any more, just fleeces and padded jackets.

    I'd appreciate any help.

Places like Arnotts and probably other ones have a "petite" section, although I'm not sure they do coats.

As far as I know Principles in Grafton Street do a petite section, you might want to try there.

Dorothy Perkins do a Petite section and have some really nice winter/wollen coats. Its not too pricey either.

Top Shop have a good petite seclection too but if its for an elderly lady it might to too 'trendy'. Although they have real 30's style stuff in at the mo so it might bring her back to her younger years!

ok i kno you said she was an elderly lady but if ur prepared to take the time you might find something..im quite petite & slight myself and here are the few stores that cm to kinda of cater to my size range 6/8 range- miss selfridge topshop dorethy perkins possibly could try oasis, sizes bit small@times, try some of the independent labels in debenhams in the jervis centre-sum are quite gud, particularly on the ground floor near the shoes(sorry cnt rmmbr the name), laura ashley on occasion have somethings-and becauase she aint lukin for anything trendy she might find it in there-or she could try M&S they do a size 8 and cater for that end of the market but their 8 is kinda big..or you could try mango/kookai in arnotts, or even clerys..but you might be luking 4 a while in there..

anyway my best bet wud be try M&S/laura ashley for that kind of style and then River Island/Miss selfridge for size...

I was in a gap store in Notting Hill recently and the sizes started at 0,2,4,6,8 etc. Can someone tell me if they know anyone that is a size 0 as it seems absolutely tiny!

Sounds like American sizes to me...

I don't know I think they were UK/EU but I did not see anyone picking up a 0 and all the sales ladies were 8 or 10 at a guess. I remember reading ages ago about some supermodel being a 6.

Having said the above maybe they were american. What is the diff?

I reckon in our sizes a 0 would be... well UBERskinny, as in, "you have no organs!"
American sizes as far as I know just start lower, so their size 2 is a size 8 or so.

To the best of my knowledge and going by an old pair of Gap jeans that i curse myself for loving (Gap are an evil akin to nestle in my opinion) i think that a size zero is about a size UK 6...but then again with american sizes you never kno- they kinda have this thing where eg their size 14 would be like a 12 or a 10-a size or 2 smaller then a uk size 14 and definitely 2 if not 3 sizes smaller than a french 14...

(god dam ubar skinny french ppl..then again thats mainly due to smoking..which aint good..however after not have had a cigarette in a long time im begining to think that it aint so evil...must resist the evilness...)

    anyway im rambling...

(cont'd)...to kinda make them not feel as bad about being so big...i know this might sound a bit mean but in my experience its true...

I thought being a size 6 was tiny, and then i went to the states and bought stuff sized 0 and 2...that was weird...(its not that im ubar skinny, im quite slim alright, its just that im rather petite...which has its advantages, particularly if theres something on a top shelf, that i want and there just so happens to be a tall dashingly handsome stranger around who might come to my assistance...hehehe devious ways of chatting up guys number 1... ;) )

That explains it! Although only some items were sized from 0 up and others were definitely UK sizes.

Was in Paris in June and there are a lot of slender women, didn't see much galouise though...

Vanity sizing makes sense - fattest people on the planet reside in the US.
When you say petite you mean not too tall? That's another thing say a lady is 5ft10 or so and a size 6 or 0 will that pose problems in terms of length etc.

GAP was not so bad even got a few t-shirts in there myself - I thought I purchased three short sleeved t's but two are long sleeved - I was really paying attention! :-)

Was in the gap store on oxford street as well and the clothes were completely different and crap. Makes no sense to me.
