PCI-X: Where is it?

Not so long ago, I remember hearing that PCI-X was going to be all the rage, and was very much expecting to see it in those shiny new Athlon Socket 939 boards, but just taking a look today, and it seems they've all gone for clunky old PCI slots. Oddly, the only PCI-X board I've seen is a gigabye P4, and P4 isn't exactly cutting edge technology anymore, so the fact that it was there kind of surprised me. The only other use of PCI-X I've seen is at work, in those new IBM X-Series boxes, and I'd have been damn disappointed if they didn't have them.

So whats the story, where is PCI-X, and when do you guys reckon it'll appear in average "home use" motherboards?

Never. PCI-X is for servers you are talking about PCIe which is different and is already in home PCs it's just AMD is a little behind in regards to chipsets - the end of this month is when the releases should occur.

Not at all PCI-X is the 64bit PCI slot for servers.. and PCI-E (express) is the new PCI slot for normal homer user boards,, look at
DUBDVD's rig.

Ahhh, right, I assumed PCI-X and PCIe were both short for "PCI Express" but apparantly not. Certainly the PCIe slots I saw in that intel board are similar in size and shape to the PCIX ones in the X365.....

Well it is useful for sli with nvidia cards. If your loaded you could get 2 now and if not you could get one nowand another a year down the line when they are half the price.
