I'm in the depths of deep decision making at the moment regarding a hard disk MP3 player. I'm thinking maybe Mini iPOD, 20 GB iPOD or a Creative Zen Touch. I haven't actually made my decision yet, so feel free to give your opinion.

My question relates to whether or not ethier iPOD mentioned works ok with USB 1.1. I have lots of USB2.0 equipment that works fine with USB1.1, and i would expect the same with the iPOD, but it actually states on the iPOD manual that i downloaded, that USB1.1 is 'not supported'.

They could be talking crap, but if somebody could confirm/deny there USB2.0 propaganda, all the better.

i have a feeling that everybody is going to recommend the creative cos its more "reliable" but i dont think it is. i got an ipod recently and it works fine on usb 1.1 and im using it with windows 98 which is "not supported" either. i had a creative zen (not touch, though) and it was a nightmare. the headphone socket broke on my first one, then i got it replaced and the usb socket broke, and then finally i sold that replacement before it could break again and got an ipod. the battery situation has been sorted according to apple so only time will tell on that matter. the ipod also feels more robustly made compared to the zen. i have mine bout 3 weeks now and no trouble, yet!!!

The creative zen touch is really nice, a vast approvement in appearance from the last incarnation. Creative definitely borrowed a few ideas from the ipod when developing the zen touch, using the smaller hard disk and reducing the overall size and weight, navigation is much easier with the touch pad too.

I've owned both a zen touch and zen nx and there's just a couple of drawbacks with the zen touch: that it doesn't have as many features as the zen nx, namely no EAX options. EAX is a set of options for customised sound settings, which really enhanced the sound quality, and a huge selling point for the zen, I thought. One other thing is that the graphical menu on the zen nx (available by firmware update on the creative website) isn't available in the zen touch, hopefully a firmware update will be available for this shortly. Other than that, its cool :)

I'm not too sure about the iPod's usb 1.1 issues, but the zen supports usb 1.1 just fine, even though it is designed for usb 2.0.
