i use windows 98se. i had 5 users set up on it, so when the computer booted up i had 5 names there for selection. when you select the name and enter your password it had a different desktop for each user eg i had my desktop with my relevant icons and my bro had his desktop with his icons.

a couple of months ago something happened. when i booted up the pc it didnt give me these options it just went straight to the standard desktop. when i clicked on anything the light for the hdd lit up and i could hear the hdd making the noise it does when it is defragging. it took about a minute after i clicked for my computer to open up. when i clicked ctrl-alt-del and ended task on "winlogon" the computer works fine.

but, if i dont end task on winlogon within 1 minute of the wallpaper loading up when i click end task the computer stalls and i have to re-start it. does anybody know what the hell is going on? i need it working cos my dad doesnt have a clue on computers except for email and he keeps forgetting to end task when it starts up, and the problem is pissing me off aswell.

    can anybody help me?!

    cheers
    moe

I had a similar problem, didn't have users set up but I was getting the thing with winlogon. As far as I remember the way I fixed it, and this is a little weird, was to install the USB update for windows 98. I think you can find it on the Win98 cd under extras or option pack or something like that, if not I'm sure a quick google will turn it up. I don't know why but this update has fixed a few weird ones for me over the years.

Sounds like the profiles you setup have become corrupted,

    Found this info

How to AutoLogon Win98 in none-network or no password needed environment

To get rid of the windows login dialog box when 98 boots, go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Passwords, enter your current password in the box Current Password and leave blank. in the New Password and the confirmation box. Then go to the Properties of Network> PRIMARY NETWORK LOGON, select Windows Logon from the list. Note: if the win98 is in a network, it may not be able to access the network because it is using blank password.
