    Hi all,

I was wondering what the implications of reproducing football club logo's in art form ? For example I was thinking of making canvas prints to sell to football fans. See the link for examples

    Football Canvas

I'm sure theres copyright issues here but is there any way around it ?

Strictly speaking, I'd say it's completely illegal. But if you're making them and selling them discretely to friends (or just very discretely), you should be OK.

I mean, you're still breaking the law, probably, but you shouldn't get caught! :D

AFAIK : A reproduction would be in breach of copyright but a derivative work wouldn't - which is how those cartoons of one club's logo urinating on another club's logo are OK...

yeah, if you can manage to 'edit' it slightly it's legally sound. Cant recall the exact figure but i think if theres more then a 16% (approx) differance between the reproduction and the original it cant classed as the same image.

a derivitive work is not legal - hence the reason i can't make a movie out of your book without securing the rights first. here's an interesting article that should illustrate the whatfor of this kind of thing:

    http://www.artslaw.org/DERIV.HTM

granded it's american, but there isn't much difference between that and irish/uk interpretations of derivitive works i think.

I assume the cartoon of the pissing logo's would be satirical.

The problem you've got is your work may be considered to be counterfit - ala the guys selling not-quite-official stuff outside stadiums etc.

it's a bit dodgy alright. if ur just making them for mates without profit then there'd be little anyone could do but if you sold em in a shop or outside matches etc. you could attract a few problems.
