dvd drive not working correctly

Sorry am not overly tech minded so forgive me if details or terminology wrong. have phillips IQON comptuer only a few weeks old, put a brand new dvd in for the first time today into cd/dvd+rw drive. toot it but didnt start up using power dvd programme installed.

Pressed ehect button on base unit, ont eject (must have pressed about a thousand times by now!) tried using eject feature on dvd application again wont work and wont load up and get not responding.

windows media player will open but says drive busy and will play playlists etc but wont eject dvd there either. manual seems to suggest that dvds can shatter so does this sound to anyone likely in this case. (didnt hear any shattering noises!) as if so doesnt seem to be covered by warranty so am in trouble.

Cannot prise dvd+rw drive open (have tried gently) and when shutting computer down earlier all applications very very slow to respond so starting to worry.

Dvd was brand new out of packaging today and region 2 and the other part of 2 dvd set works perfect in normal dvd this is the 1st time attempted to play dvd and have only played about 5 cd's prior to that with no problem, am going to call IQON on monday but just wondering if any advice as kind of worried about this warranty thing they are going to walk away from fixing..

    appreciate any help

You can get the DVD out by getting something long and thin like a pin, there should be a little hole where you inset the pin and it releases the tray mechanism. As for why it did it in the first place i dont know, have you installed drivers for it?

Will give that a shot in the norning when dont wake the whole house up looking for a pin, hadnt thought of that cheers. again I dont to much on this but whe you say install the drivers. I got a ton of discs with the whole package on was 'power dvd' which put in and went through a wizard that installed and came up with something on the screen looking like a car radio that has play, pause etc

is this what your talking about or is there something else altogether? the dvd drive was automtically installed in base unit, it wasnt an external device.

    thanks for the help!

Did you installl the DVD drive if so you might need drivers unless your using Windows 2000 and up. They would be on the one of the disks, but not Power DVD thats just a program for playing DVD's.

Had a look through all the discks that came with it, only other thing is disc with nero on it and says bundle with cd/dvd recorder only. I didnt install this one at the time as look like wrongly assumed power dvd was my man!

Nothing else that I havn't installed from disks provided

So the DVD Rom was in the PC when u brought its not one you brought yourself and installed, thats what im trying to find out? If this is the case then it could be a hardware problem, which it sounds like cos i've never heard of a drive not even opening, in which case it will proberly need to be sent back to the manufacturor.

No the dvd drive was already installed in the base unit. In fact windows xp and media library etc was also already installed, all that had to be done was works and printer and there were these two discs nero and power dvd but from what your saying these dont seem to have any mad relavance.

The front panel of the base unit where dvd drive is incredibly flimsy and has always been very sticky on the few times have used, but would you experience something different if the dvd had shattered in the drive.

Thats just what worries me from reading the manual but dvd was straight out of case when put in so would be unlikely to be majorly defective.

thanks for the help so looks like a lengthy call to IQON on monday morning!

That would be the best thing to do especially as it still under warranty and any atempt by yourself to fix it might void it, so have them do their own work. Never heard about the shattering thing before i'll have to do a google on that one. Best of luck anyway :D

Are you sure you mounted the CD in the tray correctly?
Does the drive spin? (i.e. can you hear it spinning up when you boot up your pc?).

Are the lights on the drive functioning?

Hi,Turn off computer and when it is rebooting at start press the open door button. If this doesnt work then there is something seriously wrong.Make sure you press eject immediately at start of boot,Dont let windows start.

    Let us know progress,

    regards kieran

thanks for the advice, for some reason after all my panicking at 2am this morning I just started computer up and although hadnt read above post from Kieran and thought I'd try and press eject and CD drawer opened, Checked DVD and no damage done and DVD is spotless and was in drawer correfctly.

But then when windows started it came up with error saying start with last good windows configuration or start windows normally. I started windows normally and all so far seems OK but if any of you reckon this still needs attention and to ctc manufacturer would appreciate any advice.

Only other thing is the manual specifies that DVD must be either DVD+R or else region 2. DVD I put in was DVD2+4 compatible (was one I bought off CDwow UK website) would this cause such problems but was def Region 2 as well.

Really appreciate all the help as was in a mad panic last night as only got PC 4 weeks ago and paying over 2 years on esb bill and had visions of having an expensive doorstop!
