Hm. Are you going on holidays somewhere with a pool or by the seaside?

Right, we don't have a swimming forum so I'm going to move your thread to "Personal Issues" and hopefully someone there will be able to help you out.

The 'Help' forum is actually just for help with certain problems using this website.

how can he be embarresed??? if you send him to a regular adult beginners course, everyone there will also be unable to swim so no1s going to be laughing...

It might help if the two of ye went to the pool together, if he's a bit afraid of the water. I can't swim yet myself cause I'm a big scaredy-pants but I find it that bit easier to splash about if my boyfriend is there with me.

Firstly, learning to 'swim' (as in move in the water) isn't really the difficult bit. The secret is in being able to float without thinking you're going to drown. I've helped a couple of friends learn to swim before by just being down the pool messing about with them. It was just a simple case of being close by to make them feel safe while gaining confidence and showing them how to do some strokes properly.

I agree with ferdi on this one. The most productive way for him to learn to swim would be to go to adult beginners classes. Being with a group of adults in a similar situation would dispense with the embarassment issue as soon as he started his first lesson. Also, learning with a group would mean that even if he's a slow starter there would be similar people and he'd be far less self-conscious about it.

Its very difficult to laugh when you're lungs and mouth are full of water....

If he's really afraid go along with him...and have a splash about. Maybe get him involved/distracted by getting a new bikini or 2? Make it a bit of a frolic. (Just remember to obey the signs about heavy petting ;) )

If he's really that scared of the water though - be careful how energetically you splash him.

Did you try showing him yourself just to get him comfortable to the idea before going for lessions. If he is in anyway afraid of the water or swimming he will need some enticement to get into the water. Maybe try skinny dipping with him or something. Just get him comfortable with being in the water and maybe a few pointers before he goes stright to lessons.

The Irish Water Safety site, as Drummer Boy pointed out would be a good place to start looking. And also any public leasure centre's around your locality. Go in and ask and they should usually have adult swimming lesson classes.
