It all depends. Do you want a DivX/XviD or a DVD compliant file. Are you more converned about speed or quality?

Firstly, lets assume you want a DivX/Xvid. I'd advise going with xvid as it supports more of the advanced mpeg4 features which DivX (currently) doesn't use. Also its much faster than Divx when doing 2pass encoding.

Anyway, when you decide on whether your using Divx or Xvid, you need an encoding application. My personal choice for beginners is AutoGk, the beginners version of Gordian Knot, which is what i use. Gordian Knot is by far the best for encoding to divx/xvid and i whole heartedly recommend using it, just read up on a guide first, so you know what to do to start off.

If you want a DVD copy, theres two options. Speed, or Quality.

    Speed
DVD Shrink is regarded as being the best free DVD Transcoder. And definately among the best of them if you include the commercial ones. If you are interested in a 10 minute DVD Copy, use this.

    [Quality
If you want high quality, you should avoid all the high speed Transcoders, and get yourself a proper encoder. My personal choice in this is DVD Rebuilder combined with Quenc (known as the best free mpeg2 encoder). Best info found here in the DVD-Rebuilder forum and then the "other MPEG1/2 encoders" forum for Quenc info.

All above mentioned software is free.

Thats an illegal thing to do. Disgraceful! If i ever heard that someone was using DVD Decryptor to copy rentals, i'd go down to their house and kick em inna ass! You should be ashamed :p

I rip with dvd decrypter and then used dvd shrink to compress and nero to copy. I like the fact that decrypter gets rid of region coding so I can play my region 1's on anybodys player.
With shrink do people bother with deep analysis and the other one, sharpness/smoothness, which setting do you use?

use anydvd, its run in the background and whatever dvd you put in can simple be copy directly to another disc or drag and drop to you hdd, nero can also shrink the dvd like dvd shrink does, you can also keep all content of the disc if you do that, or remove menus and such and just record the main movie, there will be quality lost depending on the size of the original but usually you wont notice much of the difference, it works better if you have it on the hdd, ie. the disc isn't in great condition and takes a long time to read, by copying to the hdd first you have a less chance of the programme crashes due to read error!

Which is better quality, nero compression or dvd shrink?
I like the fact dvd shrink lets you set the compression amounts, I copied starsky and hutch and fit the whole film on at normal quality and only compressed the extras, rather than compress the whole lot slightly

nero recode has the same features, in quality wise, I dont see any different using either!

I use AnyDVD to strip the regional coding and CloneDVD to copy. Never had a problem with it. ImTooDVD is good for ripping to mpg.

If i remember correctly, the guy who used to write DVD Shrink was hired by nero to do recode, and i believe he used the same code for Shrink as he did for recode, but only recode will be updated with quality enhancements in future. New shrink releases will only be bugfixes.

Just yesterday I did my first 2 dvd backups. For the 1st I used dvd decrypter (for decryption, obviously) & nero (for compression & burning), for the 2nd I used dvd shrink (for decryption & compression) and nero for burning only.

Both backups were perfect :) but I think picture quality of 1st was slightly better. It might be my imagination though.

It seems that dvd decrypter can be used for burning without using nero but I haven't tried this.

There seem to be a lot of options: decrypter can decrypt & burn; shrink can decrypt, shrink and activate either decrypter or nero to burn; nero can shrink & burn. There may be more permutations.

Maybe burnspeed also has a bearing?

What's the best combination of all these software (and settings) for a good quality backup?

From the limited research I've done, it seems that you should use deep analysis if you're compressing the data but no need otherwise. I'm open to correction though.

DVD Shrink removes a lot of anti-piracy when compressing. I use Any DVD also... It removes protection also.

Best to have Any DVD active in taskbar when using DVD Shrink -
