Whats your main reason for wanting one. The one your buying is a Korean made one and to be honest more often then not lacking in quality. If you could afford the American made ones I'd recommend it.

Theres better guitars out there for the money that will be have better playability and sound. But if its the look your after. Then go for it. I'm a fan of the old school mockinbirds :)

I'm quite the BC Rich fan myself, I've got a BC Rich NJ Series Virgin, a 5-String Warlock Bass and a 'Firebreather' Bodyart series Mockingbird. The Virgin is my baby of course, and I've yet to play a guitar that rivals it.

To be completely honest, don't let the fact that the guitars are made in Korea put you off. The NJ Series are really made from quality materials, they have Mahogany bodies, and quality parts, including the rather great BDSM humbuckers. A similarly priced Epiphone has pretty shoddy wiring, but the BC Rich guitars won't give you a spot of trouble at all.

I think the problem with BC Rich guitars is the fact that people look at them and write them off instantly as a gimmick or stage prop. They're seriously quality guitars, but I'd say get an NJ series over the Platinum any day. And lets not forget that BC Rich is the guitar of choice for the legendary Chuck Schuldiner! Not to mention the likes of Jon Schaeffer and Kerry King.

They truly are great guitars, just don't be put off by people who write them off as gimmicks. Even the fairly cheap Bodyart series mockingbird I've got has great action and a fantastic neck. They really are very well built.

They are actually a very very nice guitar. I've played a couple of mates American mades (a warlock and a mockinbird). Both gorgeous guitars, soundwise. Never was overly fond of the shape. Nemesis on these boards has a lovely Mockingbird (i think) that he's willing to part with I believe. You should pm him and see what the deal is.

    hmm
well i got my eye on a plantinum virgin
originally was a warlock but the virgin is a lot sexier lookin ;)
i like the body , the headstock has got to be widow style
thing about the virgins body too is if u turn upside down it looks like an axe
    apart from the body side
    it plays like a dream
picks are top stuff... real nice tone
    love the bridge
i probly wud prefer a jackson
but i got this terrible problem
most of jacksons come with the floyd rose bridge
and im like the only person who hates them?
i cant stand them bridges, theyre too restricting
in regards of ****ing around and de-tuning and so on

Mockingbirds are probably my favourite out of all BC Rich guitars. NeMiSiS's is very nice.

And if think that floyd rose's cause detunes, it either wasn't set up right, or a cheap knock-off. How are they restricting if they can do some much more than a standard stop-tail.

    Yeh.

    no
i meant its too awkward to detune with the floyd rose locking system

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Unless you just block the floyd. Then you have an incredibly stable guitar.

Given a bit of time, it's no problem to alternate tunings with a floyd rose tbh. I've often tuned the whole thing down to D, and back up to E again after playing for a while.

ill give them a try...... i kinda have to
    theyre fukin everywhere these days

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Yeah, you should give 'em a whirl. Definetly a bit on the hard side to string and tune at first, but you really do get used to it pretty quickly and it's not really a bother. Still, if you were to go for a quality BC Rich, you would have to get used to the Floyd Rose anyway.

I would recommend Nemesis' Mockingbird though, it really is a very nice guitar altogether, so don't be caught up by pointy shapes, there's a lot more to BC Rich guitars than that.

A friend of mine bought the KKV (kerry king signature) that was on sale for €499. He liked the feel of it, but the pickups which had fairly high gain weren't the best, but he was planning on sticking EMGs (81 and 85).

But anyway, certain strings go out of tune very easily so he's probably going to put in some sort of tuning lock system.

On another note, i've seen pics of Kerry's guitars, and his have EMGs and floating bridge. Apart from blatant advertising, is there any point in releasing a signature guitar if the signature bearer uses a different setup?

Apart from blatant advertising, is there any point in releasing a signature guitar if the signature bearer uses a different setup?

It's just a way to get little "fanbois" to buy certain guitars for a silly price.

    aye i agree
    signature guitars suck ass
    i'd never buy them
they seem so cheap and tacky
but ive seen some that seem ok
    but theyre well over 1000

your best bet is to get an older NJ series guitar from the mid 90's. these NJ's were made in Nagoya, Japan NOT New Jersey as some people think. there guitars are excellent quality an good sounding, also they are larger than the newer budget guitars. check 'em out!!

Thats what I'm selling dewd. NJ Series BC Rich Neckthrough Mockingbird.
    Show me the money

Jon Schaeffer plays BC Rich as karl-hungus says, and man, just from listening to Demons and wizards lately, he has the most awesome sound. Im not really sure how much of that goes down to other gear, amps, pedals, etc (im guessing alot). but I suppose BCRich is a good start.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,911 ✭✭✭Zombienosh

i know millions of people who use bc rich
    my favourite is though
the creator of the BC Rich Beast
    Brian Hoffman (Deicide)

    ;)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Eh, Neal Moser did the body designs for BC Rich...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,911 ✭✭✭Zombienosh

    yeah
    but not the beast
    that was hoffman

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

But the beast is a joke! Worst shape of a guitar BC Rich ever made.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,911 ✭✭✭Zombienosh

    after much pondering
ive decided to give the BC Rich a miss
and instead go for a jackson DXMG
dont get me wrong i still like bc rich
ok so theyre a bit more for the look than the sound?
but a decent Bc Rich has the sound too they can be great , for the right price
but i think for around the 7 hundred or so mark
the jacksons are the better bet.......
    have a look
    Here

NO NO NO! BC Rich certainly are NOT more for the look!

Besides, Jacksons aren't great at all, especially not since they've been bought out by Fender. Horrid necks on them. I'd say get yourself an Ibanez over a Jackson any day! Far better guitars altogether, and I'm certainly not a fan of Ibanez in the first place.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

I agree with Karl about the Ibanez. And I'm not a fan of the Jackson neck although they haven't changed since the Fender buy out.
