Since our memories are so short these days I'd like to remind people about what happened back in March '04 and maybe help ensure that certain greedy publicans who ripped us off last season are hit where it hurts this season.

Please have a look at the table on http://www.finfacts.com/Private/bestprice/dublinpubspriceripoffs.htm and think about influencing your co-drinkers to stick to those pubs that didn't try rip us off.

    Cheers,
    Al.

The Director of Consumer Affairs, Carmel Foley, has expressed her anger at the raising of drink prices by some publicans in the vicinity of Lansdowne Road on Saturday 27 March 2004, for Ireland’s rugby match against Scotland.

“My inspectors compared the prices of beverages displayed by licensed premises in the Baggot Street and Lansdowne Road area on Friday 26 March with those displayed on Saturday 27 March. Six out of ten premises had increased their prices substantially with the largest increase being as much as €1 for a pint of stout in Maguires, Lower Baggot Street”, said the Director.

“While there is no breach of the legislation (once they display the prices they are charging) consumers should be made aware of this practice. Customers may also be interested to note the names of the pubs which did not display increased prices. I fail to see the justification for such price increases”, the Director continued.

(Finfacts Comment- The requirement to display prices in pubs dates back to the high inflation period of the 1970's. Why is there not a requirement to display prices which can be read from the exterior of a premises? If consumers were able to access an online searchable database of prices of select items in main urban areas , isn't it likely that rip off merchants would be reluctant to head a price league?)

A most worthy campaign and well done to remind us.

Careful perusing of the list is called for. Many pubs in the area did NOT increase their prices, making do with the greatly increased volume of trade instead.

Pride of place must go to the Beggar's Bush on Haddington Road which had one of the lowest priced pints in Dublin (well South Side anyway) before the match and didn't see fit to increase it either.

Mind you some noticeable hostelries were missing from the list. No mention of Smyth's of Haddington Road, for example. Or any of the pubs in Sandymount/Irishtown who also do a roaring trade on match days.

Could be worthwhile some volunteers doing an impromptu survey on the weekend of the S Africa match in November. Anybody interested?

Definitely, lets watch out for this. Maybe even noting the prices opening where the publican can see you is not a bad idea, we can get them together here and pass them on to the likes of http://www.drinkfeckgirls.com/ etc.

I'm a Clarkes (Irishtown) regular on matchdays. I can't say for sure, but I didn't notice them upping their prices for any of the games.

    Well what about it folks?

South Africa are playing the day after tomorrow. Could be worthwhile having a quick skite around the pubs tonight to see what prices they are charging. I'll volunteer to do Beggar's Bush, Smiths, Paddy Flaherty's (51) Waterloo House and Searsons. Just to see what they're charging for Stout, Ale and Lager. Marked prices only.
Anybody want to volunteer a few more?

Prices to be posted here tomorrow so that anybody going to the game can be forewarned if they suddenly go up a few shillings on Saturday.

Here's what some of the locals were listing as their prices on Thursday November 11th.

    Searsons
    Stout/Ale 4.15
    Lager (Heineken) 4.50

    Waterloo
    Stout/Ale 4.20
    Lager (Carlsberg) 4.70

    Smyths (Haddington Road)
No price shown at either door. Very naughty of them. I was surprised when they didn’t figure in the reports last time round. Used to be the best pub with the best barmen in the area. But then it was sold a few years ago and has gone downhill at a rate of knots. IMHO

Paddy Flaherty’s (No 51 Haddington Road)
    Stout/Ale 4.20
    Lager 4.70

    Beggar’s Bush
    Stout/Ale 3.35
    Lager 3.80

    Rumms
    Stout/Ale3.80
    Lager 4.00

    Slattery’s
    Stout/Ale 3.80
    Lager 4.30

    Thanks for the reminder HH!

I'm playing in Castle Avenue tomorrow, then heading to Lansdowne from there, so I'm not sure which pubs I'll end up in. Whereever I do, I'll get the matchday price for Guinness and Carlsberg/Heineken.

    Cheers,
    Al.

    Hi Folks.

Big Game against the Great Satan takes place this Sunday. Might be a good idea for some publicly minded souls to jot down a few prices at a few local hostelries today or tomorrow so that punters should know what to expect on Sunday.

I won't be able to trawl the bars this week like I did before the Argentina game. Any volunteers want to put themselves out for the benefit of the drinking classes?

I think it's the customer's fault for paying the inflated prices. If the pubs want to charge those prices.

The customer shouldn't pay the prices if they are gonna complain about it afterwards but it's not totally their fault... the majority of pubs DO raise the prices which is not fair on their regulars either

Yeah its the customer whos paying at the end of the day so its up to them, but the publicans are still guilty of grossly abusing the situation which alot of people feel is not on (reasonable).

Went to the 51 - a pub I like a lot, buut not any more - €5 for lager, €5.30 for cider. So we left and down to the Beggars Bush - standard prices - €3.85 lager, €4 cider.

On the way back stopped in the Waterloo - €5 lager or cider.

I know who'll get my business in future
