You forgot Morbid Angel, and Immortal. Shame on you, burn the heathen! I have also found myselfl istenin to a fair bit of Emperor these days, some great stuff. On the general topic of death metal though, cant beat In Flames or Dark Tranquility for a bit of melodic death, same goes for Children of Bodom, 3 superb bands.

**** me backwards with a broomstick

Yeah, it really is something else altogether, isn't it?

Here's something that'll really blow your mind though, it's the same guy who plays both Guitar and Drums on the album. Phenominal Musicianship altogether!

Mithras are indeed insane, think of Morbid Angel on speed, playing double there usualy speed, and yourn early fast enough. The speed mithras play at is truely insane, unbelievable skill from them as a whole, shame they are barely known.

I saw Opeth at Voxhall in Århus, Denmark.

Probably the best concert I've ever been at!!!!! U people out there who haven't tried out Opeth yet, please do yourselves a favour and buy Blackwater Park, Damnation, Deliverance & last but not least: Still Life.

Sabbat were indeed from the UK alright, Dreamweaver was a great album, their debut album 'History Of A Time To Come' was even better I thought, a song from that album called 'For All Those Who Died' was covered a while back by Cradle Of Filth, also around the same time as Sabbat was a great lil english thrash band called Acid Reign....their debut album 'The Fear' was fantastic... not sure if you can buy it anymore I think their entire collection is deleted.

Excellent cover, especially seeing as they had Martin Walkier doing some vocals on the track aswell, instead of letting Dani ruin the song.

Morbid Angel = Best Death metal band ever.

    alas poor skyclad.
man 'wayward sons of mother earth' and 'a burnt offering' were really something special.
On the Cradle of filth note, my fave cover they did way 'Hallowed be thy name'.
Really thought they did a good job on that. Amazingly atmospheric.

and Pugsley, yea OMC rule, Galdar is something else. great range of material on all his albums, never rehashes the same stuff, each album seems to have its own 'theme/sound'.

heard that new Amon Amarth album "Fate of Norms" (or something) in my mates house and it pretty ****in deadly

Indeed, Old Man's Child are quite a cool band, although they are almost a mirror band for Dimmu Borgir at this stage. Arsis are a new enough Death/Black band who ****ing rule. As well as this, I have seen no mention of DEATH. Individual Thought Patterns, Human and Symbolic = 3 of the greatest metal masterpieces of all time.

Oh and Sabbat weren't really death or black metal, were they? Hosanna in Excelsis was a great song anyway, but they were more blackthrash, like Sodom. As for a favourite melo-death band, Disharmonia Mundi are one of the ones who do it for me now. Of course, Children of Bodom are one of my favourite bands and have been for about 2 or 3 years now, so I can't disclude them. They absolutely rule, even with the obvious style changes between Hatebreeder and Follow The Reaper. I mustn't forget Cryptopsy and Deception, my two most favourite brutal death bands. I urge you all to get Permanent Torment from Deception, you won't regret it.

Necrophagist are fvcking mad too. Onset of Putrefication is class. The second release isn't quite as pecial, but we'll see can they recapture it. Nile are another one-album-wonder, Amongs The Catacombs Of The Nephren-Ka is another class and brutal album.

And who could forget tech-death. Martyr's albums Warp Zone and Hopeless Hopes are two of the greatest tech death albums I've yet heard. Theory In Practice are another excellent band, Colonising The Sun still sends shivers. Have any of you heard Bloodbath? They had Mikael Akerfeldt from opeth on vocals for the album "Resurrection Through Carnage." It's a great album for DEath Metal fans, and there is some hint of Opeth-ness in some of the riffs.

Black metal bands I like: Immortal, Emperor, Bathory, Massemord, Dimmu Borgir (Although not black anymore), Borknagar, Finntroll, Anorexia Nervosa, Illnath, Stormlord and Vokodlok. There are probably more, but I would be raving for hours, especially if I get into deathrash and blackthrash bands I like. Blargh.

Jesus yes, and it was very short notice too, Elvenking's vocalist only just dropped out, so they basically did a set of Skyclad songs. ****ing unreal!

Burzum, Darkthrone, Meshuggah, Mayhem, Emperor, Mithras, Vader, Immortal, Morbid Angel and of course...the mighty Ildjarn!

    The essentials.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 316 ✭✭LightofDarkness

I would class Meshuggah as more of a "core" band, would you not? Sure they're heavy but not death metal or black metal style heavy. As well as that, Fear Factory are industrial, not death or black. And I can't believe I left out Vader in my post...

I would urge you all to check out Cynic - anyone who has heard Death's incredible Human album will be familiar with the work of Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert. Jason Gobel also played on Monstrosity's fantastic Imperial Doom album. It has been remastered and ownership would be made compulsory if I was El Presidente! This is as good as it gets.

Also, check out Athiest, especially the Unquestionable Presence album. Other luminaries of the genre IMO would be Immolation, Massacre, Obituary, Master, hey even Testament had their deathier moments on The Gathering.

There probably wouldn't be any death Metal if it weren't for Celtic Frost/Hellhammer. Pick up a copy of Morbid Tales or To Mega Therion and have your eyes opened. Respect to Venom also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 316 ✭✭LightofDarkness

Yeah, I have all 3 Atheist and Cynics demos and album. Great bands, both.

Some death metal is simplistically brutal like you say, but there are plenty of bands in this genre whose lyrics are insightful, enlightened and very well written, Chuck Schuldiner of Death being a prime example. The message I got from listening to Death was to always believe in myself, to always strive to improve myself in every way and to always think for myself. I can't see what's so bad about that. A lot of people hear the growling voice and immediately assume there's devil worship afoot when, in many cases, it couldn't be further from the truth. Granted a lot of the lyrics of this genre deal with the darker side of life, but then again, there is a dark side to life, bad things do happen, and it's as valid a lyric topic as anything else. Not everything is 'smiles und sunshine'.

As Ozzy said "It's heavy music, you need a heavy lyric" and he's ****ing bang on. Love lyrics crooned over extreme music just won't work. The vocal style and lyrical content matches the tone of the music. The music is frequently very technical, so the musicians at hand have clearly invested a lot of time improving themselves to be able to play the music, this is not the trait of an evil simpleton. As you well know, Baggio, no-one should be castigated for trying to be the best musician they can.

You don't have to like the music, but don't dismiss it just because you don't get it. Death Metal is as valid an art form as any other. It has evolved from very crude beginnings to be a refinement of aggressive technical music. Yes, some of the lyrics can be hard to take but then again, there are a lot of bad things going on in the world, it's the way it is. There are good bands and crap bands in every form of music and only the foolhardy would ignore the good with the bad, though the genre is plagued by a lot of gimmickery. It's like people saying they don't like jazz, having maybe heard some ragtime and then dismiss jazz as a whole. That's just wrong.

Id recommend everyone to check out Wintersun, very good gorup imho. Nothing new or revolutionary about them but good none the less.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 316 ✭✭LightofDarkness

Wow, your e-penis must be huge now.
Baggio, you are the typical example of the ignorant people who bash this music and it's listeners (literally). If you paid attention to the intricacies and delicacies of the this form of music you wouldn't say this, but no, you have to be arrogant and ignorant, secluding yourself in a safe world of cock-rock, dance music, super hits of the 70's and "acceptable" music. You obviously have no clue, and until you do, I suggest you keep your mouth shut until you have something intelligent to argue against this style.
As to saying they have no class, these musicians are often more developed musically than any other, with an aresenal of music theory at their disposal and they deliver it in the most extreme and outstanding manner known, other than perhaps jazz or serialist music. Bands who have no class? How about the average rock band. Ever heard of the word "melody?" Because many death metal/black metal groups are masters of it. I would like to see any "acceptable" rock act play to the technical/melodic standard of Death, Martyr or Theory in Practice.
I'll leave it at that, you've insulted yourself enough with your moronic post.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,136 ✭✭✭Pugsley

LightofDarkness, while the first half of your post is dragging yourself down to his level, and rather silly of you (the general point I agree with, but your delivery is bad), however the second part is totally correct, the technical skill behind the likes of early In Flames, Opeth, Children Of Bodom, Old Mans Child, Morbid Angel, Immortal, Emperor, etc etc are way above 99% of commercial/acceptable rock/metal, people just get the aggresive lyrics and go 'argh devil worshippers', at bloodstock a funny thing happened, some preacher was out on the street about 200-300 yards up the road from the assembly area, preaching about all the 'evil devil worshippers', which was quite funny, if totally pathetic.
However the main reason most people listen to death/black metal is the music behind it, and you simply cant beat a good bit of growling with a big stick, not to mention a good death metal gig is far more fun than any rock gig there is. I honestly could nay be bothered what their singing about, as long as it sounds good, but maybe thats just me?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Somehow methinks that Baggio might've been a little on the drunk side of things when he posted that. I'd like to give the guy the benefit of the doubt, so don't jump down his throat (yet) lads.
