AGP Slot Backwards?

    Guys,

Just upgraded my uncles machine (formally a Cereron 466, 64mb...) to a Komplett bundle (Abit KV7, Semperon 2200+, 256mb) - as the original board had died :( PSU and case are fine because they were a recent enough replacement.

But to my dismay I noticed the AGP slot is physically orientated backwards compared to the older one, and his AGP graphics card won't fit.

Since I've never come across (i.e. noticed) this before in any of my machines (and even old BX boards), anyone any ideas whats up here (am now too lazy to open up any of my machines).

I'm presuming its a deliberate change, possibly to avoid people frying their boards due to voltage differences or something similar from the AGP x1 days, or is it just that the board he has is a bit screwy - with matching graphics card (all from ccity circa late 90s?).

    Thanks

    D.

it will be to stop older agp cards from being fried in new agp slots. You'll need a new gfx card. Any will do, fx5200, 9200SE etc. All will be better than that old one.

I've built/stripped/rebuilt a hundred machines from 286's (and one old 8088 IBM test board) to 3GHz P4 (can't affird any faster yet:)) and I've NEVER seen that.
Weird, you learn something new everyday...

Thanks guys - I think astrofool is spot on.

I've attached a pic of two agp cards, an old Savage 4, and the SiS yoke that was in the original machine.

You'll see that the Savage 4 has two notches in the connector, where by the SiS has one. If you look at an AGP slot, you'll see that there's a little bar going across the slot at a particular point. In the old board the bar is orientated at the top (1/3-2/3), whereby the new board its at the bottom (2/3-1/3) - hence it appears backwards.

It's actually something I'd never noticed before, probably because like the Savage card all my other cards must have had 2 notches.

My uncle has a 17" monitor set at 640x480, and it gets used mostly for solitaire - so I'm going to give him the Savage 4, and when I finally upgrade my geforce 2  I'll have a home for it in the old NT box the Savage came from.

Somehow I don't think you'd be too impressed with my S3 Trio64V2/DX 1MB PCI card that causes a PC to beep each time the system is started (as if there's no cable connected) and starts in VGA gray mode. Handy for emergencies however - like above for instance :D
