I'm looking to publish a book (fantasy). I was wondering exactly how do I get in contact with publishers?

Look in the Golden Pages under Publishers, but first take a look at who publishes what - go to a bookshop and see what your best target publisher would be.

I can't think of any Irish publisher that does fantasy books offhand, mind.

Yeah, I noticed that myself about the fantasy, it's more or less the reason why I'm asking. Thanks anyway.

There are very few Irish book publishers (I can't think of a single one that does fantasy). I'd say you might have to try British ones.

Have a look in the writers and artists yearbook,it has a list of publishers, what they accept, both in the Uk and Ireland.

I havent gotten far enough down the line to have checked any of this out yet, but I'd be interested to know if there are many Irish publishing companies that publish 'popular fiction' generally?

Been thinking on it and while I'm obviously not positive, I cant honestly remember reading any Irish 'horror/thriller fiction' before.

I actually hadn't thought of the writer's handbook. Thanks again.

Bought The Writers Handbook 2004 today. Seems to be well worth the few bob.

Cool. While we're on it, are any of these internet story publishing sites any good?

Poolbeg does popular fiction, but it's mostly career/romance kind of books, rather than fantasy - on the other hand, if you could persuade them that there's a big market for it, you might be in luck.

There's a fantasy writing community called Forward Motion - http://www.fmwriters.com - that might be able to answer your questions about online publishers.

Yeah SHAMAN the writers handbook covers all of those as well afair. It also has some very useful tips and pointers about the industry that I wasnt aware of. Such as the common pitfalls with various different routes to fame and fortune ;)

An Irish Publisher may take it on IF its well presented & marketable but its best to aim at a publisher in the fantasy genre. Many of the UK publishers only accept unsolicitated MS from agents....check all this out in the Writers Yearbook.

Have you considered Townhouse Dublin (S & S Imprint) ?

Just sort of on and sort of off the topic I saw something on the news there the other night that mirrored something I'd read in the Writers Handbook. Namely the difference in size between the market for books on this side of the Atlantic vs the other side.

It was about a woman who had written a new Harry Potter style fantasy book. I think her name was Suzanne Clark, but I wouldnt bet my life on it.

Anyway what I do remember from the news piece were the following tidbits:
First print run for a book with massive sales expectations (on the publishers side of things) was 80k copies printed in the UK and half a million in the US, where the UK publishing company had decided to hold onto the rights iirc.

Also not terribly relevent perhaps but she was due to make 600k sterling from the movie rights which were sold already, regardless of whether they actually make the movie or not. If they do make it she is alledged to make substantially more.

Yeah, well, it's Susanna Clarke :) interesting enough story of hers actually, almost like Harry Potter but on a smaller scale (her personal story rather than the actual book itself which is called Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, by the way.)
