I cant understand why nearly every single student gets pissed off that they cant play games, use kazaa etc. I dont mean to be a killjoy (i use messenger kazaa etc at home all the time and also cant in work) but really what did you expect???

The computers are provided by the university for academic work. The security policies that are in place are to stop people messing up machines by mistake (and of course on purpose). If these didnt exist the computers wouldnt be very stable and then everyone would be bitching and moaning that none of the computers work. The labs aint provided as a digital sandbox for students. Yeah yeah i can hear you all allready but like it or not you dont have a right to moan that you cant play games.

Did you not think that using filesharing programs can lead to illegal activity and spyware/viri invading the computer. Collages/Offices can then be procuted for illegal file sharing activity then. Yuse your head, there are hunfreads of reason why they dont let you install programs, goto certain websites etc.

Also try MSN Webmessenger: http://webmessenger.msn.com if its not blocked. Google and you might find other web messenger programs.

Or, zip up MSN at home, bring it in and put it on your H: Drive.

Won't work on the Win2k machines, you'll need admin rights.

What Chromey1 said. UCD doesn't spend hundreds of thousands on computing equipment so students can arse about on them.

You don't need admin rights to unzip a folder to your h: drive.

    To clarify:

Zip up the MSN folder at home, bring that in and unzip it to H, it will run from there.

what about running norton antivirus live update.. is there a firewall blocking that from wireless laptops?

    http://webmessenger.msn.com - It's class :)

I also recommend Gaim if that works or Amsn.

That will not work. Programs need registory keys and other files to run, not JUST the ones in the program folder. In majority of collages, to stop people totally fecking the computers up they remove your ability to install programs and limit your access to drives. Common practice if you dont want to get slapped with illegal activities, fecked up computers etc.

As Winters says, you will not get microsoft msn running on win2k without admin access.

Amsn works great in ucd, install it to your H: Drive and set up the HTTP proxy (proxy1.ucd.ie:8484)... Far superior to those pissy web-based msn services.
The only problem is that between firefox and amsn, I've pretty much hit my storage quota.

Although if everyone starts doing this they might block the msn servers themselves as they have in Trinity...

But I have a laptop with Wi-Fi so I can run whatever the hell I want :)

Why argue like it's a hypothetical situation? I've been doing it for the last 3 years in the CS building and did it today in G15 in science. You *can* run MSN from the H: drive. It will not remember your settings but it *will* run. I never said install it, I said use a zipped copy of a pre-installed version.

I wouldn't say something like above if I wasn't absolutely sure it was true.

It does. We started doing it last year once our admin in the CS building got really really strict. Save everything on the (supposedly blocked :)) C drive anyways. But zipping and running works for alot of things. Works for msn, (irc will actually install), Counter-Strike, and most other things you can think of. Kazaa will install from an exe, but Netsoc appear to have blocked the usual tunneling ports this year (or we just gotta wait for everything to be running smoothly again).

As Kevok and Einstürzende have already said they will run no prob the only major problem is that it takes up a huge amount of space ( I also have FireFox in there ) To me though that's not such a huge problem since I always use Linux and have as much storage as I want.

it takes up a huge amount of space
Yeah, that's why I got me a 256MB memory stick. Oh and I've got 80MB of space on my H: drive, cause I'm special. :)

I've got more H: drive than you! :p

I would have argued with you in the past but after a summer working with pc's an realising how messed up they can get with games and rubbish , I have to agree with ya.
The best policy is to lock everthing down and have people fill in forms if they want more access, this way those who really need it get it!

AFAIR your email are stored on your H: mount, so it's 40 MB between both. Unless your special.

    Netsoc? :) Crashy crashy...

    Agreed.

In my opinion the main problem that colleges have with games being played on _their_ computers is that most colleges are under resourced and don't have enough PC's, especially at peak times (these days peak seems to mean 10am to 7pm).

It's difficult enough deflecting pressure/complaints about the lack of facilities without every single complaint being fixated on gaming. Once ordinary users see games being played at any time they automatically chose it as their example when they complain about shortages. I was involved in running a regular (and fairly large) unofficial gaming session in a college lab in the past and despite it being strictly a '6pm or later on friday' event run in a lab that was normally totally empty at this time I soon got feedback that complaints were mentioning 'my group' by name despite there being no link between us and the reason for them complaining.

What ports can you use to access irc, I put hydra irc but are they all blocked out or somthing. It just says the socket is blocked :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

WTF. I replied to that post. Maybe I closed the window instead of clicking Post.

Anywho, all traffic but HTTP is blocked by the UCD proxy.

Sign up with netsoc. They allow ftp, irc, etc through their proxy. Or at least they did last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,334 ✭✭✭OfflerCrocGod

Ye even putting in the proxy and port etc....I still can't get MSN to connect so I'm stuck to using this horrid web MSN
