    Hi

I have 50/60 users and was wondering is corporate anti spy/mal ware products such as Pest Patrol really necessary in a corporate environment?

I have the usual firewall/web filtering etc but i keep "hearing" from "concerned" vendors that i would be mad not to have it....Who do i believe...

Bottom line do i spend €2500 on Pestpatrol or do i deploy personal firewalls (symantec client security) to each machine (of which i already have ample licences spare)

    Tks

Not sure about pest-patrol but certainly spybot and ad-aware.

I wouldn't put much faith in your firewall especially if your users are using IE or have reasonable access over the machine.

LOL can't believe I got rep of "loser" for this post. Note to rep giver, your still on your gray dots.

Depends on which SCS version you have, the spyware protection in the product is only active in scanning mode and not in realtime. I definitely would advise some type of protection from Spyware.

A standard firewall will not protect an end user from spyware - even an application level proxy type. I'm not familiar with SCS.

I had been running adaware and spybot for a while with IE (with zonealarm pro). I switched from IE to Firefox because I got fed up with all the adware/spyware that would periodically leave my PC crawling. I haven't looked back... my adware/spyware intake is *significantly* reduced.
I also modified etc/hosts to block unwanted ad server URLs.

If the solution is to be deployed to 50 users then you probably need a central management console to configure/administor the solution centrally. I've only used spybot and adaware on my personal pc - not distributed - so can't really comment on this.

If they have access to the internet then they could be at risk. Do a scan on the most used PC and see what it throws up. - personal firewalls won't stop malware/spyware since you pull it to your PC. They will block lots of holes in windows itself.

some AV software does protect against malware if you buy the additional add ons - check vendor etc.

Overall I'd reckon a personal firewall in combination with a freeware malware scanner would do more good than a corporate malware scanner on it's own. Just make sure to add the remote management tools on your LAN to its list of exceptions.
