updating laptop memory

a friend of mine wants another 256mb of ram for his laptop now im not sure of make or model yet, i will have to see the laptop but how does one normaly go about finding out what ram is suitable for the laptop and where is a good place to buy laptop ram

www.crucial.com to find out what he has (has handy database of products and type of ram you can buy for said products)

Then use either them, www.shop4memory.com or maybe some mainstream sites will have it assuming its generic and not obscure ram that can only be bought on the 25th of each month when the tide is low.
